I have a 3com hub and 2 comps with Win2K Pro.
What do I need to do other than plugging the modem into the hub and then the 2 comps into the hub?

You should give each of your computers a static IP address, set the gateway on both computers to the address of the cable modem, and set the DNS servers on both machines. You could also use a program like Internet Connection Sharing to share the connection, but it requires two ethernet cards in one computer.

If your ISP supplies more than one IP address (mine allows 3 per household), you can just connect the cable modem to your hub with crossover cable, and then run regular patch cable from the hub to each PC. Set each PC up to use DHCP, and you're golden.

I don't know what your cable modem is, but mine has a ethernet and a USB connection, and you can use both simultaneously (sp?). If your is a Toshiba PCX1100U, then I can assure you it has the USB and the ethernet. But if you use both, it'll save you a lot of hassle, as long as your ISP provides 2 IPs. (Most do)

Dumb question.
Cross over vs. regular patch?

easiest thing to do is just by a switched router.
it acts a switch/hub and routs the internet connection with DHCP and setup is a breeze.
you can always add on a hub or switch to get more computer in there too.
