I've posted this on Gothic 2's Tech board, but since this isn't only related to the game, I'd like to see if anyone here could help me.
So I've been trying to install Gothic 2 on this box:
Athlon Thunderbird 1ghz
VIA KT133A (Asus A7V133)
Asus v7700 (Geforce 2 GTS 64mb)
Soundblaster Live! Platinum 5.1
Windows XP Professional
384 MB PC133 compatible RAM
And so, while installing from a Plextor Plexwriter 40/12/40A I always get this error message at one point or the other during the installation:
An I/O error occurred while installing a file.
This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file.
[Abort] [Retry]
Now I know that the CD's (all 3 of em') aren't glitched, because they are scratchless, and because Gothic 2 installed fine on another PC here (a 500mhz server tower, running XP). The CD's also copy over perfectly to the harddrive without any problems (which according to this thread (http://forum.jowood.com/showthread.php?s=5345f18571897996314122dd262faf0f&threadid=16371) should prove that the CD's are A-OK.
I don't recall having any earlier problems ever installing any software on this setup either. Basically I'm having the same problem as this guy (http://forum.jowood.com/showthread.php?s=5345f18571897996314122dd262faf0f&threadid=20103) except that the errors (after dozens upon dozens of attempts) seem to occur on any CD, although the second one seems to be the most popular. This thread (http://forum.jowood.com/showthread.php?s=5345f18571897996314122dd262faf0f&threadid=16371) is ripe with people who seem to have either glitched CD's or the exact same problem as me.
If and when the first CD installs fine, and I direct the CD query to the harddrive directory to where I've copied the second CD the I/O error may or may not reappear until it eventually does again at some irritating moment (i.e. 4/5ths complete installation).
I've tried several of the remedies detailed in the thread, among which are:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2"> Look under:
- IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
|_ Primary IDE Channel
|_ Secondary IDE Channel
If you know which channel you cd rom is connected to, right click the relevant channel and select properties.
Then select the 'Advanced settings' tab. On that there are two devices, Device 0 and Device 1.
(Again, if you know which device the CD-rom is connected to, you only need to change the one)
Change the 'Transfer Mode' to 'PIO Only'. Click Apply/ok.
</font>
No effect.

sorry for the post, did some brainstorming and opened my computer and unmounted my new memory and put the old 256mb in.. instead of the 512mb..
and the **** game installed..
but I heard game wont run any good without 512mb.. so ARGH..
</font>
Removed 128 of 384 mb RAM. No effect. I've also lowered the clock speed of the RAM from 133 to 100 in BIOS, I've put the computer on Standard mode, as opposed to Optimal Performance mode.
I've taken the CD-ROM drive from the other PC that it installed on, and tried installing it on this box to no avail (same error).
I've Flash updated the BIOS via AsusUpdate to the most recent compatible one for VIA KT133 boards (4/23/02, Day-month-year-wise). I've installed the newest VIA 4-in-1 Hyperion drivers, BUT the VIA Bus Master IDE Controller still lists as follows:
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 1.7.2001
Driver Version: 5.1.2600.1106
Digital Signer Microsoft Windows XP Publisher
I've noticed that I also seem to have another IDE controller ind the Device Manager under SCSI and RAID controllers, which is listed as "Promise Technology INC. Ultra IDE Controller" (This seems to be the one that is shown during bootup, detecting my primary master, slave and secondary master drives during bootup ?)
It is also signed by MS, to the same date and version even, like the other VIA Busmaster IDE controller... Device Manager reports no conflicts (yellow triangles).
Right now, I'm kinda stuck in what to do.
To summarize:
While installing Gothic 2, a German Morrowind-esque RPG with an allegedly more living world (not that I'd know... http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif ) I get the I/O error as seen above. I know that the CD's are in working condition more or less flawless, they are legitimately purchased and are of the English language European release.
-I've tried altering the CD drive to run on PIO mode (both through the Device mangager, and BIOS)
-I've removed a stick of RAM and reapplied it
-I've lowered the RAMming speeed (heehee http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif ) from 133 to 100 and back, I've made the BIOS run the PC in a less optimized and more stable method.
-I've removed the CD drive from a PC where it installed and tried installing it through the drive on this PC to no new results.
-I've updated the BIOS and tried to update the IDE Busmasters (both of them) to no apparent result.
ANY suggestions are welcome, since I guess I can't take it back to the shop except to replace any of the flawless CD's.
