im upgrading my grandfathers computer and that involved a newer version of windows. so i was wondering if there is a file that holds the exact icon layout of the desktop (hes old and familiarity is what he needs)

I'm not sure if there is a file, and if there is, if it's transferable..
But a really easy way would be to printscreen it, and then after it's upgraded, set it as the desktop, and then just drag things ontop their counterparts on the desktop. (Then switch the desktop, unless you want him clicking on icons that are part of the desktop if he moves something.. http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif

there is some freeware that does that, look around.. i know one shareware program i used long ago called powerstrip did that.
