View Full Version : CPU performance difference?

Right now I'm running a celeron 1.8 400 fsb 128k cache (yes I know, stop laughing). I am gonna max out my board and get a 2ghz p4 400fsb 512k cache. My main question is this. I got a benchmark program for ut2k3, and ran it. My computer ran absoulutely perfect under a flyby test, with high framerates (btw I'm running a Radeon 9800np). When It came to the botmatch test, I got framerates as low as 4. Now I know that's all in the cpu, but would an upgrade to a p4 2ghz make a huge difference, being there is different construction in the p4 and all?

My guess is that it would make a big enough difference. But wait for a few others to pour in here with their opinions.

There's something wrong with your system. Even with your current system, you should not get framerates as low as 4fps in botmatch. I have a much lower configured system which easily outperforms that. I say there is something misconfigured.

He didn't provide his settings, so it's like comparing apples to oranges.

I'm running 4x AA and 8x AF, and all the other ATI custom settings on. UT2K3 is also set full in every area, and I am running a SB live with EAX enabled, which could cause cpu strain...
UT2K3 runs on Direct3D, which is more dependant on your GPU than CPU... Why not turn off the AA and AF, those will affect performance most.
That should still make a significant speed increase across the board, though.

I still don't understand how an OVERCLOCKED 9800np could have problems with AA and AF with the gpu overclocked to 378mhz, the speed of a 9800pro and the ram to 640mhz.
It doesn't matter. AA and AF is always slower, a lot slower. Anything they tell you like "run all your games with AA and AF with no loss in performance!" is sheer bull****.

Yet I see benchmarks for high end games with AA at 4 and AF at 8 on my card and they are pulling framerates like 50+. I blame it on the celeron, bad celeron!
What are these "high end games"?
Your Celeron is part of it, but it would be cheaper to simply turn the AA and AF down, or off completely. Try turning off the AA and running in the highest possible resolution, that may be faster.

Like he said. Better to run it at 1600x1200 with no AA and AF than 1024x768 and 4x each.
It'll look as good, and less performance hit.

finity5- I'm not sure exactly, but when I overclocked my 8500 LE, everything went down the crapper. It seemed to run significantly worse overclocked just a littlebit than not at all..
I could have been doing something wrong though. *shrug*
