I've got a network set up, all using the Windows 98 version of ICS to share a broadband connection. I was wondering how you could go about hosting things like MP games from one of the client computers? Specifically, for computers connecting from outside the network from the Internet, can ICS be set up to forward packets for certain ports to one of the client computers? And if it can, what ports would be required for a JK server?

ICS isn't that powerful. There's only one option for ICS, on or off. If you want the degree of control your talking about, you need a router. And hosting games from a client computer is pretty much impossible. It's all a matter of luck, and depends on how the game works.

ICS is really a form of DHCP that sends its clients a default gateway IP. Since your clients do have their own IPs, they should work fine for MP games on your local network.

I guess it depends on the game whether you can play from a client in an internet game, but at this time of night I can't think of any reason why it won't work. I take it you've tried to host an internet game for JK and it didn't work?

The real problem poses itself when 2 computers on the network try to play with others on the internet. For example, in Starcraft, since on the WAN side, there is only one IP, Battle.net has NO IDEA what the hell is going on, thinking its getting 2x the packets, which are contradiction eachother, over and over. A few games, which don't keep track of logons, and don't care about multiples of the same IP, such as UT, aren't affected.
