Windows normally runs fine for me, but I just set up router at my house between my computer and my parents computer. Now when I am plugged into the router, windows runs very sluggish. For example, when you log into windows, it gets to the desktop, and just kinda sits there and nothing loads in the system tray. After about a minute everything will finally load. Also, simple things such as right clicking on an icon, and doing other simple tasks in windows seem to take a while longer to do when I am connected. If I unplug it, everything runs fine.
I am using the onboard 3Com lan on my motherboard. Also, I crimped my own cat5e, so is it possible that a poor connection could be affecting it (although I dont see how that is possible). My parents computer is running just fine too. I have run the network setup wizard many times, and nothing is making windows run better. I do not see why windows runs so sluggish when connected to the network, any ideas?
Also, my network drivers are up to date, and for some reason now explorer has started crashing after windows starts lagging http://forums.massassi.net/html/mad.gif

Does it work fine when it's not connected to the router? And if you start it without having it plugged in, does it start to be sluggish when you plug it in?

Yeah It is just fine when it is not plugged in, and when I start windows with it dissconnected, everything is fine.

Well I think I am getting somewhere. I changed the settings so that my computer uses a set IP instead of automatically obtaining one. Windows is acting just fine now. I was still wondering if this would be a legit fix or if their is somehting else that could have been the problem. Is it possible I will start having network issues because it is set to use a certain IP and not the routers default?

The router is probably giving it one via DHCP, and maybe the router is hanging on that or something, not enough addresses alloted (unlikely). The fix is legit, just make sure the number is of the same form as the one the router assigns (probably 192.x.x.x) and you'll be fine.

Windows has s***ty networking, the NetBEUI protocol (Which is the crappy TCP/IP substiture that windows seems to want to use) isn't even loaded by default during setup, you have to get it off of the cd.
NetBEUI in itself is stone-age technology--- Microsoft has yet to improve on it after all these years, despite the fact that improvement is definitely needed. Its slow compared to the linux equivalents, thats for sure, and I hate having to turn on my other computer so I can print some s***. I'm lookingforward to the time where I can get a cheapo pc and hook up a real linux server for a change.
For me, sharing files in winxp is buggy. There are folders I can't get into from any of my other machines, even though I'm logged in as admin and I have set the folder permissions to allow access.
yay windows...

The University of North Carolina has finally found a network server that, although missing for four years, hasn't missed a packet in all that time. Try as they might, university administrators couldn't find the server. Working with Novell Inc., IT workers tracked it down by meticulously following cable until they literally ran into a wall. The server had been mistakenly sealed behind drywall by maintenance workers.

Well I thought everything was working fine, but I seem to be unable to access my parents computer using a different IP. The default is 192.168.0.3, and I am using 192.168.0.5 now, but I cannot access any shared folders. If I set it to obtain automatically, it is just fine. I have tried other variations of the IP, but nothing is working. I dont want to have to use the obtain automatically, cause it kills windows. Any more ideas?
Ok I take that back, it has decided to start working now. I am using something like 192.168.0.8 and it is working fine on both ends. http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif

Well I guess I am still a little concerned about how it will work with a preset IP. I bought the router because we are getting DSL on friday (finally). Anyway, is it possivle that the preset IP could conflict with accessing the DSL conneciton through the router? Or since everything else seems to be working fine now, should I assume that it will work fine?

Your internal addressing scheme, including the static IP, won't affect you're ability to get data to the router if it falls into the way the current router is configured (probably a Class C (http://tiki.sorrowind.net/tiki-index.php?page=IPAddressing) address). If it works now that you can communicate with the other computers, then it will work fine once you add the other router.
