Summary of problems:
Computer randomly shuts down
Verrrry slow.
After a few random shut downs computer no longer was able to boot.
There were breif periods where I was able to boot the computer, but it was ended shortly by a STOP error.

Just recently I was able to get the computer to boot for more than 30 minutes. During this time I downloaded both Norton and AVG antivirus. These scanners found 22 viruses. Needless to say I was not suprised. I was able to remove 19 of these viruses.
The computer crashed due to another stop error after this.
The computer tries to boot again, and each time it fails. It finally gets to a point where it doesn't recognize the hard drive anymore.

It's a Dell Inspirion 8100
1.4ghz I think
128mb RAM
WinXp (although originally WinME. Changed to XP because ME was not stable at all)

If you need anymore details just ask.

Sounds like the viruses ravaged your system files. Besides going into XP setup and trying "Recovery", a format is as best as you are going to do. If you need to pull files off of it, the hard drive should still be accessible. Just boot off some CD, like Knoppix, and burn away.

I tried to do a restore point and it crashed about 75% of the way through the recovery.

Get into the computer, either in safe or normal mode, and start, run, sfc /scanonce

Then restart with your windows CD and let it do its magic.

Kernel_data_inpage error

atapi.sys

Those show up on the Blue screen whenever teh computer crashes.

I'm able to use the computer for brief periods of time. I think I'm going to back everything up and put WinME back on it, which is what it had when we first got it.

If you are planning on going back to WinXP do a full install. Upgrading sucks. Bad idea to do so.

ATAPI makes me think 5.5" drives. Try doing a system repair with the Windows XP disk. That worked for me a few times.

Do a fresh install. Probably just a corrupted install or something.
