Winipcfg is freaking out. It has "released", but will no longer "renew" without freezing. The program, according to ctrl-alt-delete is "not responding" so I close it. If I try to open it up again, the box will never appear and the program will continue to not respond. I have to reboot my computer every time I want another go.

I have a Windows 98 pc, and a netgear WGR614 wireless router. There are 4 computers total on the network, but only mine is not working. 2 are wireles, 2 are actually connected to the router. Mine is wireless. I had this problem in the past, but I can't remember how I fixed it. One minute it was working, now it's not. What's also is odd, is all my icons on my desktop reset. IE's icon has changed from the new icon to an old one, and I went into 256bit color mode. My friends and I were playing a lot of games like Jedi Knight and Unreal Tournament over LAN - I'm slightly worried someone's hacked, but I'm not sure if that's possible. I have a DirecWay Satellite modem. THat's all I can think of right now.

If anyone has any idea how I can manually assign a router IP address (like 192.168.0.4) or how to configure a NetGear WGR614 or have had similar problems, please say. Thanks!

First off: Winipcfg isn't crashing, you just don't have patience. If you wait for about 5 minutes, it will return an error saying it could not obtain an IP address.

THIS means that either your cable is unplugged (in this case, a weak signal from wireless instead), the ethernet drivers are misbehaving, (check for any red X's or yellow cautions in Device Manager) your router no longer is using DHCP, or you no longer have TCP/IP protocol installed.

First, check the wireless strength. You'll slap yourself if it isn't getting a good signal. Second, check that your router is configured to assign IP addresses via DHCP, and not force the computer to pick one, via static IP method as you want to do.

Third, check the network properties for that card, and make sure you still have the TCP/IP protocol installed.

Fourth, although doubtful, check the ethernet drivers to make sure they didn't get fudged up.

Now, for your other problem:

The reason all your icons reset was most likely because JK crashed or you closed it funny, or maybe even alt+tabbed out. Win98 really doesn't like switching color depths. JK uses 256 colors as long as Hardware Acceleration is off.

The only way to avoid this is to make sure JK shuts down correctly, or run 3d acceleration. To fix it, just reboot with your color settings correct in Settings tab of Display Properties.

If you want to assign a manual IP address for your PC, go to your wireless ethernet card properties in control panel. Double click on the TCP/IP protocol, and there you can set the IP address. Don't put anything in the other fields, windows will do it for you.

I had this happen today. Just unplugged the router, plugged it back in a minute later, rebooted the computer and everything went ok after that. ipconfig /renew wasn't able to get an IP either, although it would release.

[edit] And to configure your router, browse to 192.168.1.1. Check your documentation, cause the address MIGHT be different and there is more than likely a password.
