I have a custom comp. I wish I knew my specs, but I can't get on it. I'm on my aux. comp right now. Basically, whenever I start up, I get the blue screen with the windows xp logo that says "Welcome" But there's no welcome, just the logo. And it just sits there...doing nothing...no commands work...O_o. It's frustrating because my parents will find a way to blame it on CS and JK, JA and stuff. Any help would be great. AIM me on ParanoiaGroovy for conversation.

Before we go that extreme, what about safe mode?

safe mode doesn't do anything, but because this is a custom comp, for some reason, my dad didn't get the disks when he got it for me.
Safe mode gets stuck on what appears to be the console at the line:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System 32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys
any clue?

Before your reinstall, you might want to boot up with the xp disk and use the repair,
The one time I used it, it pretty much seemed to just reinstall windows with out having to reformat the whole drive..
you have to reupdate window/drivers(maybe reinstall games) but atleast you won't Lose EVERY thing,
Might be worth a try...

but you don't understand, I never got the disk. They installed windows and kept the disk...I'm thinking that if I have Professional Edition, my aunt can bring over her home edition and use that to boot it up? Meh, ya never know.

I'm pretty sure the OEM license specifies that they make the install medium available to you in some form.

No, someone else made the custom comp for me on behalf of someone else, and that one person didn't give my dad the installation disk. It wasn't an official company that made it....Im screwed, eh?

Well for Windows XP any Win 2000+ CD will work as a boot CD. From the CD you can do a Repair. I don't know if that will help, your problem might require a complete reinstall over the existing OS from the CD though.
If you can get into boot screen, thats a good sign, maybe you could try rewriting your boot.ini from scratch and see if that helps.

Well, thats good news. This computer I'm using now is 2000, so lets see if I can find the disk. Also, it would be great to know how I can edit the boot.ini if I can't access it. Thanks for your help though.

Well, you can either use the edit command from the command prompt (assuming you can get to it) or boot to something like Knoppix and access your hardrive from there with a Knoppix's GUI.
The boot.ini should be at the root of your C:\
Heres a copy of my boot.ini if it helps:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home" /fastdetect

I wouldn't repair an XP install with a 2000 disc, I don't even know if it'll let you. My main concern would be that the boot loaders are different.
You can only "edit" from the command prompt if you have NTFS write dos drivers, which are commerical, so something like knoppix should work, though boot.ini isn't that important of a file.

Well, I can't even get to the command prompt. My aunt should be here to help soon...
