Okay, it's like this. I have this video with cool musics on it. I want the musics. The video doesn't say where it got the musics. I want to take the musics. I tried the headphone/microphone deal with the male/male cord, and I got a horrible recording. There was a loud pulsating tone, and the acutal sound was tinny and barely there--I had to turn my speakers way up to even hear it. Plus, I get no bass. Any ideas? Is my TV just too old and crappy, or is there something else I should try?

Banks and banks of humming machinery! I've never seen so many knobs. We're going to have to do something, Charlie! Try pushing that button there. No? How about that one? No, not that one either. I know! I'll try pushing this one. Hold my hat will you? Good fellow.

Um... inputing the audio into your soundcard? This is VHS right? I have done this before, I just got a splitter than took the left/right channels and made one, and inputted through my soundcard.

[edit]heh, duh its vhs, just saw the thread title http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif

If you don't have a good souncard with red/white RCA inputs (only the high-end ones do), just get the little converter that changes red/white RCA plugs to a stereo mini-plug that you can plug into your PC.

Also, when doing this, make sure you plug it into and use the Line IN on your sound card, NOT the microphone. Only use the microphone if you do not have a Line IN (almost all do.)

The reason for this is the microphone jack is powered and amplified to... power a microphone. The Line IN jack is not, and simply just accepts all incoming signals without amplification or powering. Power and amplification will cause static, and loss of bass.

So try those things out. Make sure you set your recording channel to Line IN, not microphone, or you won't get any audio at all.

Oh, and I just realized your TV had a headphones jack. Okay, you can do that too. just plug the other end into the Line IN, not microphone. And make sure you turn the TV WAY up. The TV probably adjusts output for headphones, so the output is lowered. Just don't forget to turn it down before you unplug http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif

Okay, now I have a new problem. My sound card (SB Audigy Gamer) doesn't record properly. The sound ends up stuttered and played at double speed, the way it sounds when you fast-forward a tape cassette.

I'm sorry, I was on holiday. http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif

What program do you use to record the sound? And do you compress the recording on the fly or do you leave it uncompressed?

I use GoldWave. And there is no compression that I am aware of at this time.

Try Windows' own audio-recorder and see if it makes a difference.

Make sure you aren't doing too much while you are recording. Also make sure that each cable is in its right spot and you are selecting the correct audio source in GoldWave. I have used the RCA-> stereo converter to do this and it worked splendidly.
