View Full Version : Routers and redirection

So here's the deal: I havea router hooked up in my dorm room for two reasons:

1. To keep others off my computer.

2. There are 3 computers in the room, and only 2 ethernet ports.

When I'm hooked into the network through the router, I can't navigate to any site whatsoever sometimes, and other times the internet works just fine. The times that I can't get in, I get redirected to our IT services device registration page. I've already registered both of my computers, as well as the router.

Right now I've unplugged the router and I'm only using one computer, but I really would like both to be on the network at the same time. The router is a NetGEAR MR814v2. The computers are both on Windows for now, though I think I'm going to have to try it on Linux and see if I get the same problems. Either way, it's really making me mad. When I called IT services, they told me they don't support routers in student dorms and I should call NetGEAR.

Does anyone have any idea why I would not be able to navigate the web?

Oh, one last thing, this just started happening the other idea. I was fine for two weeks, and then it just started being stupid. The only thing I've done to either computer or router is do a firmware upgrade to the router. Could that be it? Is there a way to roll back the firmware on the router?

Many Univeristy campus networks do not support routers. I work in the IT department of LSU and I know we do not. We often dont trouble shoot those who use one, and just terminate their service. Have you read the network policy page? Might want to make sure they arent prohbited. I know you guys only have 2 ports, but you should check with the Computing office first.

[Forget all of that at top. If they dont trouble shoot it, it means they dont want you to use it. It probably has nothing to do with yoru router, and it is on the university side]

Three computers and two ethernet ports is not a good combination. Hmmm. I think it's time to try it under Linux and see if that makes a difference.

In my experience, Linksys > Netgear.

From what I've heard, * > Netgear.
