Ok, well I've had linux for about 4 months, and I love it, and I hate windows now! http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif
I'm using SuSE 9.0 Professional.
All is fine, then one day my boot screen changes, instead of the normal SuSE, it changes black, with white writing, and theres the Linux Penguin there at the top. I didn't change anything...
It worked fine, then now when I boot into linux, it stays with the white writing, and says:
Username:
I type that in then:
Password:
I type that in, then it says, signed in, Have Fun!
But it stays there!? I have no KDE graphical or anything, its just like the shell...
I can't figure out how to get into graphical linux! Is there a command or something to start into graphical? I use KDE. I kind of want to wipe that partition and start over, but, I want to get this fixed.
Pleases help!

Try typing "startx" at the prompt. I wouldn't have a clue why your system would start doing that all of a sudden, though.

This has worked for me before, as root:
update-rc.d xdm defaults 99 01
But no promises, but for a debian distro, probably different packages.
Try looking in /etc/rc.config for something like that.
btw, personal topic :P

You don't want to do xdm, that would cause the X window manager to come up, not KDE. kdm should replace xdm.
Either way, you edited some file on accident somehow, or messed with something. Linux doesn't just change by itself.

Try 'startx' and see if that loads up X. If it doesnt, post the error message.

Yea, well I'm a noob, but I didn't change anything, on purpose, or nothing to my knowledge. I tried starx, it started something, then gave me an error, I kind of in a hurry so I'll post a full error later.
It was something like: X10: Fatal Error
With a whole bunch of other stuff. I'll get back to it later.

Kinda need the entire error message to diagnose the problem.
Also, if there is anything in the console with a [!!] next to it, that'd be useful also.

Ok, I tried update-rc.d xdm defaults 99 01, and that didn't do anything....
So I went into root, then went to /etc/rc.config
In there I ran XDM, and there were options of start, restart, reload, and force reload.
I tried all the options, and they all did the same thing.
The screen would flash 3 times, from a black screen to normal, then go right back to where it was, and it said:
"Shutting Down Service KDM Starting Service KDM"
But it didn't start KDM. I think its a corrupt file with KDM or something.
Well, I also tried startx, and I have the full error message this time.
I was a little busy before, sorry.
There were 2:
Fatal server error:
no screens found
and:
XI0: faltal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on x server
":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
I don't know what that means.
But what I said earlier with KDM, It looks like it tries to start KDM, but can't. It just flickers.
Will just reinstalling SuSE on the partition fix it? I think I'll just do that, because I need my linux back.

I'd run "X -configure" and let it rebuild your xorg.conf, sounds like someone ****ed around in it http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif When I was getting the "no screens found" error, the driver had been changed to "vesa" for some reason.

post your xorg.conf or xf86config (might have -4 at the end, if so, get that one.)
You should be able to find them in /etc/X11
No Screens Found is usually a sign of faulty configured video devices, sometimes because of new video drivers, or just corruption.
If worse comes to worst, I can provide you with a standard X system config file that can get you into KDE where you'll feel more comfortable fixing it for good.
And yes, reinstalling onto the partition would fix things, but it isn't necessary.

Ok, I tried doing X -Configure and it gave me this:
Module Load Failure
I tried it again, and it FILLED the screen with a whole bunch of files. I have no idea what that meant...
So then I tried looking in /etc/X11 for XF86Config. I found it, and ran it using ./, but it said: Permission Denied
I went into root and tried it, and it still said Permission Denied.

The Xconfig file is just that, a config file...it cannot be executed.
"Cannot load module" sounds suspicious. Post your xconfig file in its entirety.

What do you mean: "Post it in its entirety?"
How do I do that?

It's a text file. Copy what it says inside, and post on this forum the contents of that config file.
