View Full Version : Anchorhead Cantina and other shots (HSC)
Alright, I deleted the last post (because I didn't like its name and felt it was getting too crowded with pics of versions of the cantina) and redid it with these new shots of the cantina, which are about a million times better. This is not the Mos Eisley Cantina, this is the Anchorhead cantina, which is smaller. Don't worry, you'll get to see Mos Eisley at the beginning
Like I said before, Chewbacca won't be following you everywhere because it is quite difficult to set Waypoints for him, and he can get hooked up in the slightest details and get blocked from following you, so he will often wander off to some other purpose of your mission, or wait for you somewhere.
On second reflexion, you will get to walk around the cantina, up to Ree-Yees, though I will make it impossible to take out your weapons in there, since there is a No Blasters policy in Tatooine bars (plus I don't want you shooting up bar customers.)
I made all those neon signs with Jabba and the winking Twilek girl, all working on shaders so they glow.
I added some more people, reskinned the Reelo skin to make a new fat rodian bar tender, and I resized the Gamorreans to a better size.

Wow...I love those signs! Overall much, much better than the last!
And if NPCs are getting stuck on the details of the level, I believe there's a NPC_clip or monster_clip or something of that sort that adds clipping only for NPCs, to counter that problem.
By the way, you HAVE to have a short scene where Chewie is down inside the Falcon working on something and Han is yelling to him, they have it in most of the movies and books. http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif
Wow I'm really happy I got SotW, I'm actually enjoying JO editing much more then I ever enjoyed JK editing... maybe because its the fact that I can make detail, and making a good tatooine level in jk was impossible, because of all the domes and stuff. then had to be 3dos, and well, sucked in my opinion. Besides the size of my map would have taken me months to day, yet I managed to do it in about 2 weeks.

I agree, Jepman. Brush editing is far more efficient and easier than sectors almost always.
Its not really the easiness part that bothers me. I just always hated the fact that if I put too much detail in my level, I'd end up with armies of evil HOM.

Jepman, I just got a great idea! You should make an aquariam lining the walls of the cantina, intended, so that it's surface is flat with wall above and below it, so it's all flat. You can then make some little fish map models or detail brushes, put them on func_trains and have them move around! That would be so awesome!! You'd have to check the turning and yaw spawnflags on the path_corners for it to work.
Good idea, but I'll leave that out for final touches, since I hear the entity limit isnt all too high, and this prolly gonna be a big level.
But then again, Tatooine is a really hot planet, i doubt fish could survive...

It has a real Classic Star Wars feel rather than the usual generic Tatooine feel in many other maps.
And I like that fish tank idea, it'd really add some uniqueness about Anchorhead and stuff. I remember an old Star Wars comic short in Star Wars Insider(The one with the guy who was insane after having been stranded in space all those years) and he was in a Tatooine cantina and there were fish tanks on the wall, too.

I don't know if this has been asked before but are droids and people going to be walking around in Anchorhead? your level looks really nice too.
Yea there will definatly be crowds in Anchorhead, and people walking around the city... how many will dpend on entity limits and how far I can push it, (with scripts (spawing NPCs here, removing them there)
A good script i was thinking, I have no clue if its possible, is for civilians, the spawn when u enter a section, and when u leave, npcs spawn in another sectyion, and the section you were just in are removed, and when you walk back in that section they are respawned and the ones in the last section disappear.. possible?

Wraa... the bar people are just standing there like discarded action figures. They need some sort of subtle animation. And those Gamorreans should NOT be smaller than their table.
I hope, for the cantina, that NPCs will move around, at least some of them. Some should walk around, some should sit, some should stand.

There is no entity limit.
JM, brush entities, like func_trains and func_doors max out at 512. If I'm wrong, that means WLS is wrong, and since they got that info from Raven, that means Raven is wrong...
There IS an entity limit for other entities, too. I hit it once by laying down over a hundred turrets (allied with me) and then spawning a Desann... The level crashed and told me it ran out of entities.

People will of course move around, I hate the plastic figure feel the cantina has right now, but I can't script yet, so I'm making the level, and going to do all this when polishing off the level.

However, the only real complaint I have with your level is the sand. It looks too much like the buildings. Maybe just a slight change in the color...

Part of "New" Anchorhead is built on top of ciment and stuff, but you'll get lots of send aroung the landing area, and the "old" Anchorhead.
And then you also have the imperial stronghold

It looks great, but it seems too clean, sterile, and gently lit for a bar. I'm not really sure how to explain it, perhaps some orange light instead of the white to make it a little harsher, and make things look more cluttered, abused, and aged. Like I said before, it looks great, it just doesn't seem like a bar.

How many entities beginning with func? There is a limit, whether it be a few thousand or a billion. WLS might have been wrong when they said 512 was the max for func entities.

It looks fantastic, but the bar needs colored lighting like AKPiggott said. If you make other rooms (i am sure you will) make them more open and spacious. Remember that this is Tantooine, a hot desert planet. Ventilation is needed. . .
1. Yes, add some subtle colored lighting.
2. Ventilation is needed on Tatooine. You could have some grates placed around the cantina with little target_speakers and a moving air noise. http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif
Perhaps in the back of the cantina you could have a guy passed out on a table. He could be holding a drink in his right hand, and occasionally try to bring it to his mouth. ICARUS has functions to attach GLMs to hands, and you can play Desann's dying animtion (where he lifts up his saber) periodically. http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif

Looks brilliant. As Ant said, the cantina could use some colored lighting, preferably a brown or orange hue of sorts.

Hey by the colored lighting they want it to not have the bright cool setting that your cantina seems to have. BY putting an orange,yellowish or reddish hue into the lights itll help give that hot dust filled setting that is essentially tatooine. I think that overall the cantina is great id liek to present a couple of ideas.
Don't have bottles completly covering the bar since i know your going for the cluttered and abused look but 30 bottles standing straight up on the bar isnt exactly realistic.
The actual bar should be made of something other then concrete to show the star wars technology aspect and make the little stand behing the bartender longer and make it have the bottles organized by making stair like stands for them so they rise up kind of like how bars are maintened today.
Make a tap machine coming out of the wall behind the bar or whereever you want to put one to also to show technology.
And lastly in the entrance of the cantina make one of those machines like in a new hope that is on the wall of the entrance. When 3p0 and R2 where stopped by the bartender in the movie look to the left and you'll see the machine im talking about i think it is a weapon detector or droid detector. The cantina looks really crowded. You should have some AI, (I'm not familiar with JO AI, but I'm sure it's not much different from Q³)to where they'll start a bar fight with you, but at the door you should loose your weapons (for a period of time, until you leave the cantina) You should even be able to order drinks (GTA: VC style). My shift key is dying on me...

hey anybody: why is the lighting weird when dealing with the curvy things? i'm guessing their called patch meshes. i don't know. i guess i've read somewhere that they can't cast shadows and in these pics they show quite plainly where the seams are. it irks me a little. these pics are incredible, but i was wondering if this lighting-patch-mesh- thing is inherant to the way the Q3 engine works or if it can be countered.
You can light patches, Jepman just didn't use the -patchmeta switch when he compiled what you see there.
oh okay. just wanting to know. i plan to give this a shot once the new computer is all set up.
Like i said these shots are taken with fastest compile options.
My level takes over 24 hours to compile on final right now :P
Now I removed all light sources except the sun (and acutal light (spots and such)
It looks good, except that all the shadows are 100% black,,, :s

I thought of _minlight, but then that means I can't have anything almost pitch dakr in a level, like the prison block and stuff i wanted to be kinda like jabba's palace where han and chewie meet again
The radiosity with Q3Map2 should fix that.

Try to make the cantina look a little musty inside. I think a tanish light entity near windows, doorways, or other openings would give the effect.
You could use a very light fog brush at the cieling to create the effect of smoke and such, it would look great.
Smoke from cigars and such, by the way.

well, did any of the ideas i gave you interest you...? Also if your looking for ideas of what the city is liek, ever played Ep 1: TPM tha game for PC. The part where your Qui-Gon and rome the city has some really cool SW themed ideas. Since i know you have most of the Architecture done you just need people to "inhabit" your city. Just giving you ideas, this will eb greatest SP SW game to date. Awesome job Jep.

I still have over half the city to make, make an outer wall *detailed with buildings and such, make the imperial quarters (a whole big base you have to infiltrate).
So I'm guessing this will be pretty big. :P

You said your compile times take a really long time, right? I just learned that having GTKRadiant open and monitoring the BSP process slows it significantly. Turn off BSP monitoring options in preferences, and once you run the compile, shut GTKRadiant down into sleep mode (File menu).
Ya emon, i already had bsp monitoring off, and i had gtk radiant in sleep mod, when i was editing the map :P (i edit whilke i compiles)
Uh... I can't imagine it being a good thing to edit while compiling... If you do, save it under another file name temporarily. If the compiler is running while changes are being made to your map, that could get really icky...

Its annoying, you people seem to get hooked on the smallest, stupidest problem in the level. Maybe the fact that I can't light my level properly is a bit more of a problem then this? SO I KNOW HE NEEDS A FRIKKIN BOW, shut up about it already. Sheesh!

People here are so obsessed with gun models, it's crazy. You look at the main page and different people post their NEW gun models(Which every one says is impressive anyway) which looks no different than the other uzi's or other machine guns that you see on here. It's just the same gun over and over again! What's so **** impressive about it!??!
Everything here is Imperial Base, Sith Arena, Spaceport, machine guns, Luke skins over and over again, a "Temple" that looks no different than the last, etc.

true very true but people dont really care its quite that simple. I am a newb and just this week took up modeling expecting some cool critism and people commenting. Instead Supers pen gets more replies in a day then my jedi(it must really suck or something since i made it myself and didnt reskin anything made by the gods at LEC) or watching people collaborate to rip on something like the bowcaster, people just shut the f*ck up unless it can help the author. I can see one person saying chewie needs a f*cking bowcaster but that moron is liek the 5th one... jeese im sorry but this is kinda getting out of control. Massassi= User made/based SW **** in general. (this excludes people who acutally intend on putting there guns into JO or JK like Team Battle TC since. Everyone else should showcase them a quake forums or something since we all now no matter how many people say "put in JK/JO" they never do.)

Jep, I think that if you added a light blue light to the area around the blue lights, it might make the cantina look a slightly more interesting. They shouldn't bath much in blue light, just the lights and a little bit of the nearby wall. Does that make any sense?
