Shameless Bragging about my New PC
2009-12-08, 5:41 PM #1
CPU: i7 920 (overclocked to 3.6ghz)
MOBO: AsRock x58 Extreme
GPU: AMD 5870
RAM: 12gb (2x6) Kingston DDR3 1333
HD: Intel G2 80gb SSD + 1TB Western Digital Green
Optical: Samsung 24x DVDRW
PSU: 1010W OCZ GameXStream
CASE: Antec 300
OS: Windows 7 x64 Premium
MISC: Corsair Hydro H50 CPU Cooling

Total Cost: $1624 including shipping and taxes.

The build was really smooth, the only mistake I am really flogging myself for is I forgot to switch the SATAII mode to AHCI in bios before installing Windows7 and I dont feel like reinstalling now. My temps are a little high at 3.6ghz, flirting with 68C I might play with the voltages a little more.

Picture taken while I was waiting for SSD and PSU to arrive:

Vantage- P17156

What are those digital numbers display at the bottom right of the mobo?

It's for error codes. I think most motherboards will display something like FF for Fully Functional. If there is a problem it will display an error code which you can lookup. It's replacing/augmenting the PC speaker beep system.

Don't bother with Crossfire. It's far too buggy and low on performance in comparison to just buying a whole new card later on.

12 gigs of RAM? I am jealous.

What are you going to use the 80 gigs of SSD for?
2009-12-08, 6:32 PM #10
the OS presumably. possibly game installs too. faster response.

Windows 7 and frequently used applications. So far installing all games to the Harddrive.

That's what I was thinking, but I haven't built a PC in 5 years so I don't know what's hot.

Seems like a pretty good idea to put the OS and other things you want to load fast on a SSD. How does it effect the boot time (or other operations that it has an effect on)?

How far away are we from rendering classic magnetic hard drives obsolete, anyway?
2009-12-08, 6:41 PM #13
if i had to guess, i'd say 5 yrs before sizable SSDs are cheap enough to justify use by more than just enthusiasts.

as for your other question, i dont know, i have no experience in the matter.

Dude you can totally push your i7 higher than that ... I have mine at 3.6 (190x19 I think?) full load / 4.0 Turbo (190x21) on air. You could probably hit 4Ghz+ on a 20x multi no problem.

I just timed the Win7 bootup with a stopwatch it was 26 seconds from exiting BIOS to usable desktop. That's not too impressive, I am sure fast HD's with a freshly installed OS come close to that. Might be a little slower than normal due to my AHCI blunder. It is pretty lightning fast with launching apps. When I installed AVG it does an 'optimization scan', and on the SSD it was completed instantly. I think the small OS SSD + large HD will be a popular combo for the next few years.

What in the world are you going to need 12GB of RAM for? By the time we require that much, it'll be much quickr and your PC will be complete garbage. :/

The rest I'm jealous of though.

Lock your doors because im going to ninja that sexy beast of a PC.

I'm happy with 3.6 for now. The H50 isn't like a real water cooling kit, it's all self contained and only 120mm radiator. It performs on par with the highend air coolers. I am sure I could hit 4.0ghz, but I think my temps would be higher than I want.

I don't need 12gb, but it does let me have some fun. Vista and Win7 will use alot of spare ram for prefetching. I have Firefox setup to use 512mb of memory cache instead of disk cache. Anyway the difference between 6gb and 12gb was only 80$.

I think he'll want to fix the cooling first - I'm not overly familliar with the Core i series, but 68c seems pretty doggone hot.

Pretty nice :)

I'll probably stick with my current computer until at least the AMD 6000 or nVidia 400 series of video cards come out; it's still pretty decent. I haven't come across any games I couldn't play yet, anyway.

How are you finding the SSD? I've got a 300 gig velociraptor for a system drive and from looking at benchmarks it didn't seem like solid-state would give very much of a performance boost above something like this.

Raptors aren't even remotely comparable to a decent SSD. Anandtech has a couple massive articles on why (it has to do with random, small file access times).

I'm already frustrated by how long it takes my friends to load levels in online multiplayer games; an SSD would make me go crazy.

Although it's fun to taunt them on voice chat that their computer is slow and that they need to hurry up.

El oh el I hit high 70s consistently in p95 burns ... generally anything under 80 (even 85 if you're daring) is considered "okay"

And dude I'm jealous because I want to do the SSD boot drive thing but I have too much crap right now to clone to a new 80GB SSD and like 120GB SSDs are mad expensive and it'll just be a huge hassle and :(

I don't think you had a very good showing there with that expensive raptor. My 1TB cheapo WD held pretty close.

You say 2x6 gig sticks, yet I see 4?
Also sup 300 buddy, I cheaped out on the case too. I hate the fact that the PSU is on the bottom.

Yeah... the last two I blame on USB2.0 speeds, the first two are just old drives.

There are 6 sticks there. I actaully love the Antec 300, it's my 3rd build using it.

I used an Antec modular case on one of my old pcs... it was pretty cool for the original build... but upgrading became a pain in the *** really quickly... which is why i haven't touched that computer in like 3 years.

Weird how my cheap slow huge storage drive is faster than my WD Black (except in access times)...

Re-ran HDtune (the previous results were from a few months ago, when I was still running Vista)

A bit better this time. I also tested one of my 1TB storage drives for comparison, seems like pretty standard results:

Ok, I know I need to let this thread die. Just wanted to post the completed sexyness pictures I took this morning, before retiring the previous PC.

Cable management could be better, but I managed to keep most of it off the motherboard so, Im happy.

I probably should have taken this one at night with the lights out- but some glowing blue sexyness.

I like the power supply location. I've used the same Full-ATX tower for the previous 3 builds... My next one needs a new case lol
