'Thinking' Bots?
2000-11-27, 9:19 PM #1
Well, I'm pretty good at cogging, and I was thinking lately, while playing Q3A and UT: Hmm, how do the bots react so human-like to real game situations? Is this possible in JK? Can we make the bots, in essance, 'think?' This got my juices churning, and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas? I was thinking of a custom movement routine that can be dynamically modified by a control cog, but I'm not too sure. Also, if anyone has any technical informtion on how the bots from Q3A and UT work I'd be more than happy to recieve it.
(Oh BTW, if anyone's interested in why I'm asking, I've modified Nightmare's AI cog (over the course of the last year and 1/2) to support low-lag adventure style play, and I wanted to put some 'umph' into the bots.)

Oh, and Ranyar, I'm sorry that I've done nothing to help Rbots. I signed up for it, but I've been too busy with other things, (not to mention my above 'pet project' [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]). If you can find a space deep within your heart to fogive me a large burden would be relieved from my chest (darn self-help videos are going to my head).

No problem.. but would you be interested in merging your project with Rbots? Perhaps with a total redesign to incorporate the strengths of both?

Just something to think about ... if you don't want to, no problem.

Cheers...

Sure, but they're not as smart as your bots. Mainly I've developed a way to change levels within a .jkl so you can have varied AIs with different weapons/skills/etc.

I was looking a doing a similar thing myself, but wouldn't it generate a checksum error when others join the game in multiplayer?

Anyway, even if your bot doesn't do that much, it sounds like you've got plenty of ideas that could contribute to Rbots. Are you interested in joining the team?

Cheers...

Well, sure i guess; I need some modivation to finish my beta level anyways. What I did was make an all-powerful server cog that synced a trigger status to anyone joining the level, which would, when distributed, setup all he level features on the client end, such as dynamics, bots, and the like. My boss AI uses the same permise, except he has special 'magic' powers instead of routines. But, all in all, it's pretty cool.
