What should i do to start learning to really cog. I know how to change gun 3do's and differnet projectiles, edit enemy health, and stuff like that. What should I do to really start editing?

A good concept of basic programming language is a must. (not BASIC the programming language) Stuff like counters, if-then statements, loops, efficient logic, ect ect. You can only aquire this knowledge by reading a programming book. A C or C++ book would do nicely beacuse that's what cog is based on, so you'll get the structure down pat while learning the basics. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

From there, you'll need a good imagination, and a copy of JKSpecs. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

WRONG. I have never read a programming book, yet i know cog better than most of us here... Of course there are better coggers than me, but no cog still is impossible to me.
I learned COG by reading cogs, i have read like every lec cog, i read them again and again and again until i knew how to cog, i modofied them a bit to see what happens... Cog is pretty much like english, it's very simple... If you can wait a few weeks you will be able to learn it by reading my tutorial [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Cave_Demon, instead of this man wading through countless cogs trying to learn how counters work, a programming book would teach him that in minutes. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] I admit, I starting cogging with ZERO programming knowledge, but after taking my C++ class (equivalant of a book, seriously) at school, it helps me in my cogging. Aggy... i DO know cog better than 50% of massassians, so there. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Of course, because over 50% of the Massassians can't cog [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Cavey, less than 50% of the people on Massassi are editors, and less than 5% of editors know COG, so only 2.5% of the 'people here' know COG.

I learned COG the hard way. Trial and error. LOTS of error. And I had very little prior programming expiriance (Does BATCH count?).

Tutorials help, but the only way anyone can learn COG is to get thier hands dirty and actully WRITE some. Once youve learned the syntax, and memorized all the verbs/args, youll be cogging with the best of us...

You don't really have to memorize all the verbs, that's what JKSpecs are for. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

That's what the JKSpecs is for, but it doesn't quite make it. It's a good reference until you get used to cog, but it's just not trustworthy.

I started cog with a little Turbo Pascal experience which really helped. I read no cog tutorials because I didn't know there were any. After I had been cogging for about a year, I read a book on Turbo Pascal. Reading that book greatly improved my programming abilities.

So get a C/C++ book and learn the basics. Then read some cog tutorials (but don't trust them to far!). I think if you learn cog that way, you will master cog in half the time it would take you to learn cog by looking through LEC's scripts.

Cavey, not reading any instructions may seem like something to brag about, but the truth is, you wasted a lot of time.

Having the verbs memorized is a big help when writing Cogs, as it cuts down the time needed. MOST of the time, I can write a cog completely from memory, without any help from the JKS.

Thats not exactally what I meant. Ive learned a good 60% of them over the past 1 1/2 years, simply by writing cogs. And its not just the verbs you need to memorize, its all the valid arguments for each verb.

Start by reading every cog in res2.gob :P

lol my solution, i copied about a billion verbs to paper and have them pasted on paper on either side of my compuer, now i just gotta figure out twhat they do =) visual basics is messing me up. Cause we do such easy stuff with only 1 to 2 verbs right now but now i gotta take like 5 verbs and pump them all together =)
