Well, I started learning level editing 6 months ago, then put it aside as school got busier and busier. Now, however, I am out of school and find myself with much free time. So I've taken up level editing again.

Anyway, all that aside, I am thouroughly stuck on my first attempt to cog. I am using PotHead's Basic Doors tutorial, and it works fine, until the part where I have to add the cog. He says- "2. Change the "door0(thing)" value to the "thing number" of your door. (the thing number is displayed when you are in the "thing" mode and a "thing" is selected) Leave the other 3 door values "-1" "

Ok, I have no clue where the heck to find this "thing number" and I am guessing that is why I coudln't get my cog to work. I just left it as "-1". And alas, no opening door.

So could someone please clarify what the heck I am sposed to do with this elusive "thing number" which I cannot find?

Thanks [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Select Thing mode. Select the thing. In the upper left hand part of the item editor (hit enter if not showing). It should say 'Thing n' n is the thing number. -1 means unused.

Ok, thanks Descent_Pilot. Unfortunately, I still am clueless about cogs. I really need some help with putting in the frame values. The first one is easy. I hit "copy frame" then I paste it into the first frame box. However, then the tutorial says to do the same thing a second time, afetr I move the door up to where I want it to open to. I move it up there, and a value is automatically put in.
However, then when I move the door back to it's original position, both the values change again. And no matter what I do, they keep changing for no apparent reason. Then, of course, when I go to test it, the door doesn't move. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Select Frame mode and select frame1 (because frame0 is the first frame {almost everything in JK starts with a 0}). Move frame1 to the open position u want it and that's that. Thats how I do it.

Heh heh if there's anything I can say about level editing, it's that it defies all forms of reality. :P

Anyway, so I did what you said, but I musta done something weird cause when I went to test the level it worked all right- the door went up, floated to the middle of the room, then floated back into the wall, where it is supposed to withdraw to when it opens.

So I went back to the JED editor, and found that somehow I had set the door to go out into the middle of the room. So I delted the extra frame position and went back in game to test again. And of course, the door is now unmovable again. Sigh...

Remember, there is 3 dimentions, you have to have 2 frames. You also have to have 'numframes' in the thing item selector (w/o quotes). Be something like
Code:
numframes 2
frame 0/0/0 0/0/0
frame 0/.4/0 0/0/0
I wish I could find out how to take Screenshots in JED to directly show you. You could send me the level, but we'll have that as a last resort.

What in the world does that mean?

Yes, the door should have two frames. The first, frame 0, should be the original position and frame 1 should be the opened position.

Ok, I know there has to be 2 frames. My problem is getting the correct ones. Like I said, when I try to record the values in them, they keep inexplicably changing, and when I go to test the level, the door won't move.

All right, well I got the door to work. I don't know how, but I gestimated the value for the second frame, and finally got it right.
Now, moving onto the *next* problem. But that goes in another forum. So thank you all kindly for your help, if I encounter more cog trouble (and I'm sure i will :P) I'll be back.
