Accurate crosshair....

I'd like to incorporate an accurate crosshair as seen in many games today. You know, how it adjusts itself along the aiming vector/fire vector of the weapon and where it'll hit is where the crosshair will aim.

Problem is I only have half an idea on how to go about it. Fire an instant impact projectile over and over, and in the removed message for that projectile, create the crosshair. I know that much, I'm not quite sure how to position it. -_-

Suggestions, help, beatings are appriciated.

A really, really short timer?
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

Nonono, open up JO MP, and notice the crosshair in 3rd person. No matter where you shoot, the crosshair is always correct.

I've also tried to do that some weeks ago, but I had to screw the idea. I just couldn't find the correct position...

Perhaps fire a projectile at a quick pulse that detonates after a certain time. the explosion is a crosshair sprite. it disappears after a bit longer than the pulse. Just an idea.

Yeah, but the problem is, that the line drawn from the player's POV to the own crosshair does not point to the destination of the fired projectile...try it out, you'll see what I mean.

Does anyone know the postion offset of the 3rd person? Why not fire the template from that postion, then work with the pitch to get right, finding the distance between you and your target and some vector math. It just an idea, but hey, it could work.

I think it might be impossible to get the 3rd person crosshair working right, because the camera does not come from a unifrom position like directly behind the player. The result is it will be to high if you're looking up and to low if you're looking down. (perhaps the other way around) Or at least, this is what I've noticed while testing.

I was thinking more of vectorcross using the distance of the player to the target and the offset.

What if a custom 3rd person camera was in use?
