The Datamaster has some good cog tutorials, and I guarantee that you'll use this "Cog Bible" extensively as a cogger.
Just remember, though, that practice is the real key :)
Taking a programming course in C, C++, Java, or any other similar language also helps a lot.

To a certain extent. The design principles you learn by taking programming courses will be practically useless, but the COG grammar definition is an almost verbatim copy of C.
