Scrolling Mats
2004-03-25, 6:02 AM #1
In JK, I want to set a mat to scroll, and show more than what it shows when it starts.

Kind of like movie credits. But when I start the game, it only scrolls what first see.

My mat is 128 by 1024, and I want all of it to be shown.

I tried extruding a sector, so that the whole mat is revieled. Then I cleved a window out of the unshown surface and made the top and bottom's geo 4, but it still does the same thing.

How would I do this?

Your mat is too big, 512x512 is the biggest mat possible in JK in software mode, 256x256 is the biggest with 3d acceleration enabled, you need to cut your mat into a few smaller mats.

Actully, Stormtrooper, Ive gotten mats at 2048x2048 to appear properly in JK with software rendering....

Dj: The only way to do this would be to make a series of 3d0s with parts of the mat on them, that move by in sucsession.

I've heard 512x512 as the limit for software, but I don't really know. And it's a moot point, as practically no one uses software rendering for JK. Hmm, how to do that using the 256 x 256 restriction... create an animated 256 x 256 texture. If you want to make relatively smooth scrolling, make it16 frames to get to the next image. Then have a cog replace with another animated image, which animates scrolling to a third, and so on. It would require 4 animated images with 16 cells each, and a bit of cogging, but it should allow decently smooth scrolling. Or you could double the number to 8 textures, and provide even smoother scrolling. This should work, I believe, though I don't know much with cog.

If you do that, don't make it animate too fast; JK crashed on me when I made my static texture animate at [forget number; prolly about 20-30] fps.

How about this. Have a sector with your credits on a wall, and have a camera move down the credits. Very simple. Just ask at the COG Forum!

Would you care to explain how?

Also, I like Edwards idea. It's probably the simplest and easiest solution to what you want to do.

I like that idea, too. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

That's if he just wants it to scroll on the screen. I wasn't sure if he meant he wanted it on a wall scrolling like movie credits...
