Problem bringing my editing to a halt
2004-03-29, 4:33 PM #1
For some odd reason, whenever I add a new sector to my ST project JED file, the sector is not there in the game. I even placed my walkplayer inside the sector, yet when the game start, my walkplayer falls forever.

The walls of the sector also do not react to light. I checked all the flags for both the sector and the 3do and nothing is out of the ordinary. Nor are there any unusualy errors in the consistency checker or resources checker. Anyone know what could be going on? I only have 210 things in the level so far, and around 800 sectors. Any help?

Check the number of surfaces. There's a limit of something like 35,000 surfaces in a level.
Probably 32,768.

No, I only have around 9000.

Heres the current stats on the level:

Sectors: 823
Surfaces: 9365
Things: 212
Lights: 176

Those aren't terrible bad numbers

Have you checked the +GEO settings for the surfaces of that new sector? They may have some how got set to 0...

It is 32768, but having more wont cause this problem. If you cross that limit, JK wont be able to properly save the level, but it will still play just fine.

This sounds more like a problem with the JED file itself, perhaps its been corrupted somehow. If I were still running a Windows box somewhere, Id suggest you send me the JED file so I could have a look... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

You might try copying out all the sectors, things, lights, and cogs into a new JED file. Its a bit much, but it might solve the problem.

That wouldnt cause this. There would be lots of HOM, but the player wouldn't fall...

I doubt this is your problem but submerged walkplayers can have that falling effect too.

Any-Who ... what GBK said.

I think the mention of it being the Jed file sounds right. It sounds like the sector isn't being written to the JKL. So when you put the walkplayer there, it's outside of the gamespace, which JK solves by infinite falling.

I thought that with a sector-engine, we didn't have any "outside space" though?

create a box and delete the floor surface... you'll see what they mean.

Well, the problem went away. Not sure why. I had a lot of unconvex sectors in empty space where I had constructed 3dos and left them there, and after deleting them all the problem went away. Pretty sure that solved it somehow, but not sure why it was causing the problem in the first place.

Maybe this will teach you to use some proper editing techniques next time. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Pfft...there's nothing wrong with having non-convex 3dos as long as all the surfaces are convex. And as for leaving the constructed 3do sectors in my level (in empty space), it's actually a safety incase I need to re-edit them easily later.
