So what's the deal with Jed

Did the author abandon the Jed project, or are there updates planned?
If not, has the source code been released?

There's really nothing wrong with JED as it is, It's probably one of the most stable programs I've used (notepad has crashed more than JED has for me) so it doesn't really need any more updates.
Anyway, If the source code was ever released it would be somewhere on the Code Alliance website. http://www.codealliance.ca/
If not, you can always write plugins for it that do what woudl be to hard to do in JED.

Jed crashes fairly often, for me. It also gobbles up my system resources in no time. Not to mention the node heirarchy editing is a bit buggy. There's also a lot of lighting data in a jkl file that you can't edit with Jed (ambient sector light, vertex light). Jed needs better 16-bit support (certain 16-bit mats don't show up right, or at all, for some reason). That one's not something I'd likely be able to fix just yet, though. It could also use some support for 3do geosets.
Don't get me wrong; I like Jed (namely because it's the only decent jkl editor out there). But it never hurts to take something good and make it better.

I've already checked code alliance. They're in the process of changing servers, so a lot of stuff is missing. I doubt it's there, if it's even been released.

Ambient sector light must be either extra light or sector tint.

New JED updates? Sure, thatll happen. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

The last update, .951, was a maintenance fix for a bug in the node hierarchy editor. Thats all. So, unless youve got major pull with the CA guys, and theres some bug you want fixed REAL bad, there wont be any more JED releases... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

If JED's crashed on me in the past 4 years, then I don't remember it... It also doesn't suck up system resources. I've had the occasional mat problem in JED, but only with texture placement on tiny 3do surfaces. JK has given me more mat grief than JED.

The source code was released. I remember asking about it once when talking to a couple of CA guys. They sent me a zip, but I've lost it since. I'm sure someone here's got it on their computer. Even so, I'm sure no one would mind you editing it, it was a freewear program.

I've had Jed suck down my resources to 10%.

Ambient light is the basic sector light value. Extra light is an addition to the ambient light.

windows 98?

I wouldn't mind a new version of conman mind you.. so annoying having to rummage through 10,000 folders everytime I want to switch between my working dir and JK dir. That and it'd be nice if it could get notepad to open cogs in gobs.

No it wasn't. Whatever they gave you wasn't the source code, perhaps plugin source or SDK, but not source code of JED. Never.

...and, just because it's a freeware program, does not mean they won't be touchy about you editing it.

I was also under the impression they released the source at one point. Of course, at that time, the creator of Jed had stated he wasn't going to work on it anymore. At least I'm fairly certain I remember that happening.

Either way, I can think of a lot of things that would be nice to see in Jed.

For one, fixing the resource picker to allow full viewing of larger mats, animation controls on animated mats, the ability to preview some of the less used JK files, ie, .par, .spr; Perhaps some integration with Mat16/MatMaster2 and PJedi (with permission of respective authors of course), some of the texturing bugs fixed (like that pain in the *** single color surface texturing bug), fixing the display of transparent 16 bit mats, including translucency in the 3d preview, better mode compatability for 3d preview, and so on and so forth... and this is just a small list of things that would be nice.

Most are just little bugs or quirks that have been personal annoyances, at least for me... On another note, I have had Jed crash and behave oddly at times, both on 98 and XP.

Are you talking about the bug with texturing small surfaces, or something else?

One of the things I'd like to do is put a sidebar as the object editor (like in Puppet Jedi), instead of having a bunch of separate ones.

What I was referring to is at times, surfaces on 3dos I'm working on, get their surface texture replaced with a single color from that texture. Shifting and modifying UV numbers doesn't affect it. Shifting may change the single color to another pixel color in the texture. I've had it happen with large surfaces as well as small. It can be somewhat fixed, by stitching from a nearby surface, however, only some work, and that isn't always great for getting the texturing how you want.

But, also, I've heard complaints of texture misalignment after moving sectors, and scaling. (I've actually never had problems with moving sectors affecting texturing... don't know why.)
