If you wanna do levels, download JED here on Massassi in the Programs Section or over at the JKHub. Then read the basics and after that, try some of the easy cleave/adjoin tutorials.
If you wanna edit anything else, read the JKSpecs linked on the Massassi front page. There are tools for everything, just ask for anything specific.

First of all, download:

JED v.0.951 - The JK/MOTS Editor

Then download:

The JED Manual - All the basics and tutorials are included there.

Read the basics. Then try tutorials: cleaving, extruding, adjoining, applying textures, then water, then stairs when you get used to JED, then you might want to try breaking glass and doors; the more you do, the better you get. It's pretty easy to learn actually.

And then in a month or so of doing tests, try doing a Test Level, that will include all the basics and tutorials. Don't post it on Massassi though. You can always ask questions on the forums. We're there for you. :)

Yes. The number one thing to learn is that you don't want to make a mod or a level your first 100 times with JED. After you've learned enough to make a basic archi'd level, then you make a couple test ones. Once you're confident in your skills, hop on over to http://www.jkhub.net and graduate. All of us there are veterain editors who are willing to give you hands on attention with any aspect of editing. We've got experts in every field.

In case you're as stupid as I was when you started out, you don't make walls by rotating catwalk 3dos sideways and raising them up to make doorways.

You also don't copy the first sector, carefully position it next to the first one, and the adjoin them. There's this nifty extrude tool.

And about the doorways thing, you must learn to cleave.

And making doors isn't hard at all (if you think it is... or whatnot.) you just click 'make a door' and then make sure it has somewhere to go.

That's all the help I can think of for now.

[edit]
There's also some sort of stiching tool that makes texturing a crapload easier then selecting each surface and then selecting a texture for it. ";" and ":' or "," or something like that. I don't remember, it's been so long since I edited.

Hello New Editor

And "Axis", you had me rolling w/ laughter, with the 'building of walls' and 'doors' by rotating catwalk 3dos. Classic. =)

And yup, there is a fast way to stitch / copy textures from one wall to the next. Once in preview mode ( F12 ), use the mouse to click on a desired wall, then press the ; key to COPY that texture; then using preview mode again ( F12 ), click on the wall right next to that wall, then press the ' key to PASTE the same texture on that wall.

There are also some very helpful, and convenient plugins, that will come in handy once you've started editing. For example, the SURFACE_FLAGGER plugin lets you multi-select many surfaces at once and change their properties. This comes in handy, if you wanted to change all your ground floor surfaces to be 'sand' and wanted it to sound like 'dirt' when you walked on them.

But for the Basics, you just need the JED EDITOR v95 itself, and the JED FULL MANUAL ( a very handy reference guide when u want to learn something and there is noone else around to ask ).

It also helps to add these JED Editors MSN Emails to your MSN list, under group heading - JED EDITORS -. There should be a sticky post at the top of this editing forum thread with a current list.

Don't be afraid to just try anything. Play with all the functiuons, learn what they can do for you. I deleted Jed and reinstalled it three times over the course of a few years, then one day decided that I would learn what Jed's about whether I ended up liking it or not. Since then, Jed's become so intuitive, I have trouble learning other level editing progs!

Don't buy JKedit.

Use the error-checker thingy every nano-second.

I'm fairly certain JKEdit is freeware now, but still JED is far superior to JKEdit, however easier JKEdit might be.

For what it's worth, here's a few suggestions to take on board when first starting out. I think most editors have either experienced this first hand or would agree me:

  • Most (not all but most) JK editors prefer using JED over JKEdit. Its entirely preference based: JKEdit is easier to produce basic levels, but lacks the "richer features" that make JED more powerful (and flexible too, what with plugins support). As such, you'll get more feedback help if you're using JED - but to each their own...
  • If you're interested in level editing, then adhere to editing rule 101: don't submit your first level! Download a few levels and see what makes them good or bad in areas such as playability, lighting, item/enemy placement, architecture, special effects etc. Each of these aspects effects how the player "feels" and interacts with the environment.
  • Following on from the last part of the previous point, be creative: think "out-of-the-box" but try to keep an element of "realism" to your levels. The important component is to make the player "believe" that the level they're playing in could be real.
  • If you see some swanky special effect, chances are its a (clever) cog script. Cog is the scripting language used by JK/MotS engine to provide dynamic events in your levels. Its not hard to learn how to do most basic things, but if you run into trouble, then you know where to come ;)
  • I can't emphasise this enough: experiment with getting to know how JED works. I wasted over 2 years editing time by not realising I could alter the cleave angle of JED ("Shift + [1-6]") - instead painfully doing all my editing in "Vertex" mode. Heck - that still haunts me now...
  • Seek feedback and criticism and accept all suggestions (even if you don't necessarily agree with them ;)). If someone's gone to the effort of pulling apart your mod/level and offers you feedback, it's usually due to the fact that they believe it can genuinely be improved and they - like you - would like to see your project reach its full potential :)
  • Visit this thread for a list of resources that are worth
    downloading
. Starting out, I'd recommend ConMan to extract other editor's GOB/GOO levels and see how they have done certain things. Like kirby said, there's a vast wealth of knowledgeable editors over at the JK Hub who are willing to help test/debug your work as well as offer feedback.

Well I dare say that I've prattled on too long, but I hope this is a start :)

Hope this helps for now :D
