Well... The domain seems to have disappeared! 404 indeed! Shame I removed the file after installation.

Anyway, now that the program is full and free, I might just use it alot more...

If you are getting there from my news post, you should read the whole post and notice that I specifically said that the download was in the "Editors" section of the site :p

Hmm ... the date on the exe in the downloaded zip shows 26-Feb-2005. This, I think, is the actual release date. ;)

Well, before all of you go rushing to get it now that it's free, you should know that the main reason many editors here don't like it is NOT because you had to buy it. We don't like it because it doesn't have much functionality as far as cleaving (splitting) which means that any detail your level needs will be VERY hard to make. JKEdit is very user friendly tool, but that's because it doesn't have any advanced features. I would recommend to everyone here to learn JED and then decide which tool you prefer to use.
If you just look at JED and freak out, take a deep breath, then come back here and we will gladly get you started.
I personally use a bit of both. You just have to learn where each tool is better.

I can work easily in Jed, but I look at JKEdit and freak out... I might have another look though since it's free.

no, no, no. You misunderstood me. I feel that they both have their strong points, and I'm not going to tell them which one to use. I merely said for them to take the time to learn both then decide for themselves AFTER they learn each one's strengths.
As I said, I use both JED and JKEdit for me levels.

I have found that both are good, in their own way. For me, it was through Jed I learned that every level I made had to be in a seperate folder. Now which is easier? For me, it is JED, in some sences.

My thoughts on the different editors:
JKEdit has alot of "automatic" stuff. To create a door, select a surface, select 2 grid nodes, click create door, select door, and some other attributes, and then it is done. Same thing for landscapes, stairs, domes, elevators, cleavings, and so on... Jed, can have these automatic things through plugins. But, for me, I find that Jed is more flexible when it comes to things like doors and elevators. And also, when dealing with Jed, I have come to learn things about JK that I never understood from JKEdit. Course, JKEdit was not free at the time so maybe things were invisible to me then.
Anyway, these are my thoughts and opinions. If you think different, then feel free to say your piece.

I don't fully understand doors and elevators in Jed, and screw them up often. Tell me- if I made my own door 3do which has any random dimensions (but an appropriate chape) could I auto-make a door in JKedit? Can JKedit open and mess with levels started in Jed?

I think it's like VB vs. any serious programming language. As in VB, you can get quick and easy results in JKEdit. But, because a VB/JKEdit user doesn't really know what he's doing, the detail work/special fx will be very hard, if not impossible to do. The consequences: Not more than 1 of 100 good Jedi Knight levels was built with JKEdit.

Jed has an auto-door function too, that will work with any 3do.

 when'd that happen?
I've got a website. It's at Geocities because I'm too cheap to get my own site.

Hit F9, then go to the second/middle tab.

I think this was mentioned in one of the 2 door tutorials (one of them REALLY needs to mention that you DON'T want to have "thing frames move when thing moves" checked when you're doing that method -- drag door, copy/paste frame info, move door back -- took me ages to find out why my doors weren't moving anywhere in JK)

Yeah, this is one of those things that's been there... It creates the frames settings for you, adds a cog, sets default values...
