The two best editing references right now are the JKSpecs and the DataMaster. Neither of them is complete, and I think we need a way for anyone to contribute editing information to an online database.

MediaWiki (the software behind wikipedia) provides a great way to do this. I have taken all of the information from the DataMaster and added it into a wiki which is running on my server. The address is http://www.bitcan.net/wiki/

I've been working with this for a little while, and it seems to be going fine. The only thing I'm worried about is that my internet connection may not be fast enough. So try it out and let me know what you think.

Bitcan.net has its own forum. So after this thread starts to get old, please post your comments on the bitcan forum.

The JKHub has been developing a wiki for the past few months with the exact same software. You've obviously got some work completed. I suggest you stop into #JKHub on irc.Holonet.org and talk to either d-_-b [me] or ZeqMacaw.

Well, if you weren't new here you'd know that yes, that is how Kirby talks to everyone. :p

I think what he's getting at is this:

The JKHub is setting up a wiki system that aims to do the same thing as your wiki. Wouldn't it be better to work together than have duplicated effort?

He was inviting you to come and chat with him and the other admins of the Hub to figure out how you could work together. There's nothing stopping that conversation taking place on the fourms, it's just that a real time chat is easier to have a conversation in.

Absolutely. I want this to be a community project hosted somewhere on Massassi. However, I have already put a lot of work into the layout of my wiki, and I have the DM's HTML translated into wikitext. Without seeing your project, I can't tell how easy it will be to copy information over to it. What is the URL?

I realize that, but his choice of words could have been better. Also, I prefer to have this conversation in the forum so everyone can see what's happening.

The Hub is an off-shoot of Massassi. We're hosted by them. I hope we're gaining influence as the part of Massassi that is still devoted to JK editing, but that could be wishful thinking.

Zeq has been doing most of the work on the Hub's wiki. I'll direct his attention to this thread for you.

Nice work on the wiki, Centrist. I am glad to see others working on making JK editing easier. :)

The wiki on the Hub has been changed (and is still being changed) to conform to the Hub look-and-feel. The default wiki layout is not a very good interface, so I have been changing that, also. There isn't much content in it yet, due to my wanting a few more things to be ready before publicly announcing it on the Hub's main page. You can look at the Hub wiki, which I call the JK Library, by clicking on the References, Tutorials, and Articles links in the Hub's logo menu (top-left). Most people will not be able to edit any of the pages until I have completed a few more features.

[Edit: Removed silly copyright question and statements due to Centrist being SaberMaster.]

Hmm...Are you (Centrist) really SaberMaster? :D

[Edit: Ha! You must be. Welcome back.]

:)

Yes, I'm SaberMaster. I started using "centrist" about a year back because I wanted a more thoughtful and less common screen name. I would've told you all right away, but I wanted to see who would notice. ;)

I have no problem with the hub controlling the wiki. It's great. And your interface seems faster than monobook. It looks like you still have a long way to go, and I have a few questions. Is the "main page" going to remain a contents page? What about using a menu that can be included at the top of each page? Have you decided on the color scheme? And have you decided on the layout?

You sort of completelly misread what I typed... I was actually asking if you'd help us... I reread my post and, if I had used any words that you saw as offensive, I apoligize, but I just don't see how. I was being NICER than I normally am, simply because you obviously put a crapload of work in, and that impresses me enough to show that you deserve a little respect for your work. I apoligize if I came off any other way.

[Edit] Oh, I see, you read "Obvious" as sarcastic. No, not at all :-P I was being sincere.[/Edit]

Some of the layout is established (like the Hub logo menu), but it is mainly a "change as we think of better ways to do things" layout.

I am not sure which "main page" you mean, but I will assume you mean the pages that the References, Tutorials, and Articles logo links go to. These main pages will likely stay something like "contents", because the top of the wiki pages will have a "menu" much like you have on your JK Wiki. For example, the existing References section has a menu with these links: Updates | 2D Graphics | Audio | Config | Engine | Level | Model | Script | Video. The Updates link will likely be removed from that menu, and placed on the "main pages". The color scheme and layout will stay like they are now, until we can setup "skins" for the site.

Currently, PhantomCoder (aka Hell Raiser), Giraffe, and I maintain the backend stuff for the site, and JediKirby helps with some of the other admin stuff like news posts and Image of Glory posts. PhantomCoder originally had the Hub on one of his sites and programmed, for example, the uploader stuff. Giraffe is the main db and coding guy. I have mainly worked on general organization of the files and the look of the site. I have also merged the login/session stuff of the forum system and the wiki system. And, somehow, I was sucked into the wild world of the chat room, #jkhub. :D

Based on your serious research for the DataMaster and your skills in making your own site, we would welcome you as another Hub admin. Let me know what you would like to do.

Keeping JK editing alive,
:)

[Edit: Oh, by the way, a while ago I coined a new acronym in the chat room: RTDM, which means Read The DataMaster. :D ]

Thanks for the welcome. :D

I appreciate the offer to be an admin, but I know I won't have enough time for that. However, when you guys decide what kind of layout you want, I will contribute what I have. If the verb groups remain the same, most of what I have can be copied straight over. The menu on my wiki pages is added using a template (template:menu) and the javascript is from wikibits.js. I'd like to think I didn't write them for nothing, so please use what you want.

And JediKirby, I have been reading the forums lately, and you do like to talk down to people. That, plus the bad choice of words, made it easy to misread your post. But that's ok, I know what you meant now. And you were right, I did come back. ;)

I am very glad to see that JK editing is still going, and I'll continue to help out when I can.

I don't know if I exactly talk down to people. I think what you're seeing is that I don't flower my posts with sensativity and excess smilies. I just say what I have to say and that's it. I dislike pruning my language with an 'optimistic' sheer. I guess that explains my custom title :-P I'm more joking than not when I "talk down" to people.

You know, I've been going over my old editing/cog forum posts, and I don't remember any of the stuff I've written there. So much random info on verb usage, flags, template quirks, engine mechanics etc. that is now essentially gone for good. This Wiki is a great idea but unfortunately about 4 years late.

Don't let this discourage you though, I'm upset right now because I had so much knowledge to contribute and am now pretty useless :(

(Oh, and one week does not call for the necromice so cool it :p)

I care not about necromancy on worthy topics. :D

4 years late, huh? Is there a better, easier game to edit? If so, let me know, and we can start making a Hub site for it. ;)

Having fun anyway,
:)

Oh no, you misundertstood me completely. I think the Wiki (and the Hub in general) are fantastic projects, and I wish I had more time on my hands to get back to editing JK - I've tried editing other games but nothing is quite the same. All I'm saying is that if a wiki were around a few years ago, it could've contained vast amounts of information that has by now faded in editor's memories.

This was tried quite a while ago.

It failed miserably, when everyone forgot it existed and stopped posting information.

Fardreamer: Ah, I see. :D

Cool Matty: Really? It seems that *everything* has been tried before for JK, and has failed, so this "news" is nothing new. :P
