Dark Forces 2 and 3D Acceleration?

Hello Massassians,

I have a question that I hope one of you can answer regarding that lost little treasure known as JKDF2. Seeing as how I could not conjure an answer myself and many long searches have failed to yield useful results, I thought that your technological expertise regarding this particular game could aid me. Recently, I downloaded a mod here known as Jedi Knight Enhanced with the sole intention of enjoying an old favorite of mine with upgraded graphics. Now, the mod itself works fine, as does DF2 when running normally. However, for some reason unbeknownst to me, enabling 3d hardware acceleration causes the game to crash. It is not related to the mod, as it will not work regardless of the mod's presence. Upon enabling 3d hardware acceleration, the game will work until I attempt to actually play, be it a new game or loaded game, upon which the screen goes black then crashes to desktop with an error reading roughly, "JK.exe has encountered an error and must close. Blah-blah-blah..." Afterward, the music continues to play despite the fact that the game crashed, and I am forced to take the CD out to prevent the music from continuing. I do not know what is causing this to happen. I am not much of a technology guru, but I do know that I am using DirectX 9.0c, and that I have ample space available on my harddrive. I hope somebody here can help me.

Sincerely,

Sadly, I don't have a solution to your problem. I do have a similar problem that might give us clues to a solution.

A few weeks ago, while working with Direct3D in another program, my computer started experiencing graphic glitches that would sometimes cause the display to be completely warped -- needing a restart of the computer. The only way to stop the glitching was to lower the hardware acceleration in the video card's Troubleshoot tab; due to that setting, JK now doesn't even recognize that a 3d accelerated card exists in the computer.

I tried updating DirectX and my video card's drivers to no improvement. I have yet to get 3d acceleration working again on that computer (without glitching).

Note that up until a few weeks ago, JK worked just fine with full 3d acceleration on that computer. Maybe something went bad on the video card.

Thank you nonetheless. I wish I could recall if I had ever used 3d acceleration with DF2, but it has been so long since I last played that I couldn't even fathom a guess. At the time that I did play the game, I was running a poor computer -- essentially a cardboard box with little buttons drawn on in red sharpie. I doubt I ventured so far as to even attempt to use it without fear of my makeshift computer erupting into flames. I certainly have no trouble with the game otherwise, which is, unfortunately, a bit of the worst for me as it gives me nothing to pinpoint as a possible cause for this problem. If the whole game was acting bizarre, then I suppose the problem would lie within the game itself. But as of now, I do not know.

I just now tried a few other display settings, and ended up updating the video card driver via Windows Update, and it now seems to be working without the glitching in both JK and my other programs. I noticed the working driver is older than the driver that was glitching, so I guess I must have tried updating the video driver a different way and had not noticed problems until later.

Note I am using WinXP and an old ATI on-board video in a P3-550 computer (yes, it is "ancient").

Also, when I have helped others get JKE working, often people would have to update video drivers (possibly to older versions).

Thank you very much! That seemed to have corrected the issue. I had to revert to an older driver version, luckily not too far back, and now it runs perfectly, without a hitch! :)
