I try to make lifts but they go off left/right, i've tried loads of times but it never works....i've now had enough after I pressed the switch to make it go down and instead came sideways and killed me..HELP

Sounds like a frame problem. Try reading the tutorial again....

One way to check is to enter frame mode and use the "n" key to cycle through the frames. That way, you can see in JED exactly where your frames are going.

I've had problems with doors that spin when they move before. Maybe what you're seeing is kind of like that. I don't know what caused it, but deleting the doors, cogs, etc and redoing it from scratch has always fixed it.

i can never get the "copy as frame" to work right, so i do it manually- it's not that hard. last time i tried the "copy as frame" option i had that happening to me. if it's only moving up or down the only change in the frame should be in the z direction. also, make sure that the pch/yaw/rol is the same in both frames (the part after the colon):
(x/y/z:pch/yaw/rol)
