texturing/surface help
2001-02-03, 5:21 AM #1
Well, some of my surfaces has gone nutty!! Some with almost diappear from under my feet, other will do this weird thing to the frame rate, another will just make me fall forever with the wierd frame rate thing. Also, some of my textures turn pink or blue at certain angles! The last major issue i got is the hardest to explain. When i move around my level,( a city level) i might look up at a bulding, and the texture will rapidly go invisble then reapper, then from another angle it look fine. There are tons of these, so when you just walk aroung the whole level looks messed up. I went to my consistancy checker and found 3 errors, and i know there are more than three errors in my level! Please Please Please, anyone, help me out!!

It's a little hard to say just what you have going on there. Can you post some screenshots?

Here's my advice to you just from what details you've provided. Look at this to find what those consistency checker problems are and fix them. Unfortunately with the server switch of Massassi that page may be temporarily unavailable.

Also look at my web page (link is in my signature) at the editing help/troubleshooting page. Again it's temporarily unavailable because it's a Massassi hosted site. When you can get too it look at the section on HOM and see if that's some of what you are seeing.

It sounds like you may have too many ajoins visable at once... espiacally if its a city level. (There's lots of open areas with many ajoins)

To post pictures upload your image to a webserver (Like geocities or something) then use the [img] www.yoururlhere.jpg [/img] (without the space between the tags and url)

Of course to post a screenshot like that you have to have it on the internet somewhere already. If you don't have a web site to post it you can wait until Massassi gets back up and use the editors corner.

Hmmm... Do you have the option 'show overlapping sectors' option activated? It might sound as if you may have overlapping sectors in there...
No signature for you.

I have a website to put it on, but i have never done anything with a screenshot before. I took a few but now i don't know where the heck they are on my computer!!! I'll look around more though, and my next reply will have the URL in it. Yes and i do have a lot of adjoins, and some anti-gravity too. Someone told me that anti-gravity will cause this too.

Hey i finally got my web builder up, something went wrong with my member name on homestead and blah blah blah i owe money yatta yatta yatta...anyway...i got the picture on and the site is a little screwed up, but the picture is not! My level really looks like that! I seem to be staning in thin air, you can see through the floor and through a building, and to the left there are a bunch of jumbled up stuff. Now, the stuff to the left flickers on and off to normal and to that, and changes from everyangle. Well anyway...the site... http://www.levelimages.homestead.com/index.html

I assume those surfaces with the dflt texture aren't supposed to show. Do they show up in Jed's 3d preview or just in the game?

i have had this happen on several levels.

you have too many adjoins visible at the same time, and jedi knight has trouble displaying all of the surfaces. you may notice if you look at the buildings at one particular angle it gets worse, and at another angle there is no effect. merge some sectors, and make it so that you can't see as many at once.

the only other problem would be HOM, but with HOM the surfaces don't flicker, they just aren't there.
2001-02-04, 5:30 AM #13
Wrong. HOM is almost always evidenced by a flickering effect. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

City levels require an extremely well planned setup(intended to reduce lag), and very efficient cleaving. You'll have to merge a ton of sectors together, and then most of their surfaces. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] Don't do that until you grab the most useful Jed plugin: Vertex Assassin!

First of all, yes the dfly mats were supposed to show (i just started textures, and threw some on before i put the pic on... Second of all, i don't know how to merge a sector, and lastly, should i even bother trying to fix this thing or just give it up?!?!

OK, I think I see the problem you are talking about now. I don't know if there's anything you can do about it.
