how do i enlarge sectors w/o adjoining them?

Do you mean like when you press F9 and scale them? or do you mean like when you got a room at the end of a hallway that you want to make bigger?

If its the room at the end of the hallway then you can extrude each side of the room by pressing "shift x" and then merging the two sectors by muiltiselecting them and pressing "m" Just make sure you don't have any none convex sectors after merging though.

Or you can drag the walls around to make it the size you want.

Select the surface, then press drag the mouse while holding down the ctrl key.

not drag the whole sector,just the walls.

you have to be careful that you're not making a sector concave by dragging a surface, but if it's something simple like one unadjoined suface of a cube, then select the surface (sometimes it's easier to click on it in 3d preview) then use the ctrl button and mouse button deal to drag it out. otherwise it might be easier and more pactical to extrude the surface instead (x or shift+x) after you've selected it.
