you have to create it. just make a new file and name it whatever you want to. this is where you save your .jed file to. if you have any cogs, mats, etc. that you want to put into your level, this is where they go. i have a folder titled "project levels" on my computer, and in that i have all the levels that i'm working on, each in their own project folder.

I prefer to have a different project directory for each level I work on.

hehe. i actually create a new folder every time i make a change to a level. i number them sequentially, like lhh1, lhh2, etc. if i have things like mats, cogs, 3dos etc, i just copy them and put them into the next folder. i open up the last one that i saved and tested and "save as." for example, i would put all of the stuff from my lhh32 folder into the new folder titled lhh33, open up lhh2.jed in jed, then save as lhh33.jed. i know i could just open up the jkl from the last one and resave as a different one, but it goes pretty fast the way i do it. the main point is that i can quickly revert back to an older one if i really mess up.

Uuuuuummmmmm..... Ever notice the 'Backup Copy' option on the File menu? That's what that's for. Your wasting time, disk space, and being incredibly anal retentive when it's completely unneccessary.

Don't like your changes? Open the most recent backup instead of the last one altered. Save, Save JKL and Gob, and get on with your life.

Uuuuuummmm, so what?
i'm new to this and still haven't figured everything out, so thanks for your wonderful advice. the reason that i don't make a backup copy as you suggest is because sometimes i decide i don't like someting i'm doing after more than 3 or 4 tests. does the option to make a backup copy create a new folder with everything i've placed into my project directory in it? another thing is that after using the consistency check, saving the level, and actually playing it, when i open it up again, the consistency check says i have a non-convex sector, even though it didn't before. a back up copy would just make a copy of the file with the same error, wouldn't it? sometimes the sectors appear convex but the checker says it isn't. it's not like it takes that long to do it my way, and the wonderful thing about my hard drive is that it has plenty of room and the incredible feature of being re-writable, so i can erase old projects as i get further along. as far as being anal retentive, i think that just gets confused with doing the only thing you know how.

You can create more than one backup copy. It saves the .jed stuff. Everything else in the project directory doesn't really mater when it comes to backing up.
