I have created a level, saved it, gobed it, but when I try to play it in JK all i get is a "ERROR: Cannot load Level" What could cause this, and how can I fix it???
2001-02-11, 8:52 AM #2
Sorry, did i forget to mention I was useing JED, and the consistanc checker comes out fine?
2001-02-11, 8:58 AM #3
did you save the jkl to your project directory? Aslo after you gob it, you should use save jkl and gob and put that in the episodes directory.

Ok, now i must REALLY look like an idiot....

What is this Project directory, is it a file i should have made or something, that is one thing i have always been confuzed of, could someone please explain it to me?
2001-02-11, 10:33 AM #5
do not worry. i was confused too at first.

Ok do this:

Make a new folder on your desktop and name it. Go into jed, load up the level that you made, then when you save, save to the folder. And then save the jkl to the same folder. Then gob to the episodes directory of jedi knight or mots, and then save jkl and gob to the episode directory, then start a new game. The project directory is also where your dloaded 3dos and mats should go to.

So, try that and tell me if it works or doesn't. I'm about 99.9% sure that it'll work though.

Actually, I wouldn't save it to the desktop. Every icon there takes up system resources. Just put it anywhere on your hard drive.

Here's what you need to do.
1. Click on the link in my signature.
2. Go to the editing help section. I talk about what the porject directory is there.
3. From the editing help page go to the troubleshooting page. I talk about the could not load level error there. It's most likely something is messed up with your settings in the episode editor.

I understand what ou have said, but it still will not load and I gat the same error, any other suggestions?
2001-02-12, 6:56 AM #10
When you go to the episode editor in Jed, does the jkl displayed on there have the same name as the jkl of your level? Also, does the "cd" part show a "0". If so, change it to "1".
2001-02-12, 6:57 AM #11
umm....do you have a walkplayer in the level?
I am lost and could care less if someone finds me.
2001-02-12, 7:50 AM #12
yes, i have a walkplayer, cd is at 1, but as I 3D preview the level, i notice a few errors that might be causing it. First of all, every once and awhile, when i preview it, every thing is dark, but when i troggle it to full lighting, it is fine.

This one is a bit harder to explain, I seem to have a random wall, that has no thickness, and also can only be seen from one side, could this be the problem?
2001-02-12, 8:02 AM #13
that's probably not the problem. That occurs when you have an adjoin flagged as textured, so simply select the surface with the problem, press enter, and for geo type "0".

As for your other problem, this probably won't work, but try moving your walkplayer around a bit.

that gets rid of that wall, and i moved around the walkplayers, but the thing still says CANNOT LOAD LEVEL, any last resort ideas?

Note, this has always happened, with all my levels, ever, i have never figured it out

I dont think your an idiot that used to happen with some of my lvls but since it happens with all of yours it must be something that you continue to do wrong... but i have no idea what that would be

were u ever able to fix it, or did u just scrap the level?

By the way when I say all, thats like 2

Have you been through all the possibilities listed in the troubleshooting section of my website?

I still think its an episode editor problem. Make sure the .jkl file it refers to in the episode editor is the one that actually gets created. If you have different .jed and .jkl file names or have them as more than one word it will cause that.

I have stumble across this problem on a level or two. I tried to figure it out myslef and got nowhere. I even checked every resource on trouble shooting I could and it would still not work. I just scraped the level and started anew. I have had other levels that work fine and i don't think i will every solve that annoying problem.

BTW the consistency checker is not a super genius it only finds some things. It could be something unkown that is screwing the level up and the checker isn't chatching it.

Well, here's my suggestion. To make sure that your JED is running fine, start a new level. Do absolutely nothing to it and save the jed version. Then go into the episode editor. Click Add or new. Delete the top file from the window. hit update, and like tit was said before, change CD to 0 and level to 1. Then save JKL and test (save jkl & gob if the previous way doesn't work) Then test your new level in JED> A cube with dflt.mat (the yellow/gray checks in JK, a gray-blue color in MOTS) should load up. If this level loads, then there is something wrong with your level. If this doesn't work, try redownloading JED. And, I don't think your an idiot. If you find my last post, it asks how to adjoin 2 different sized rooms. Doesn't get any wrse than that. Hope this helps you out

and the winner is.....MikeC!

He was right, it was a episode editor problem, i had spaces in one of the file names. (i figure this out after I change all the serfaces in the whole level, and then change them back)

Thanx!
