Framerate questions
2001-02-22, 12:36 PM #1
Here's a few questions on framerate if anyone can help? Is the framerate governed by sectors, surfaces or vertices? Which is better - to have fewer larger sectors/sufaces or loads of smaller ones?
The level Morpheous has lots of tall buildings but the framerate is good, now when I try and create large buildings the framerate stinks! and I don't think I'm using any more sectors than is nessesary.
Any other tips for improving framerate except not using so much translucency and less 3do's would be most helpful.
Cheers...

I'm pretty sure that several large faces are faster than a lot of smaller faces. You should make it so that the user cannot see all of the buildings at once. There are also COG's and stuff to ease your pains but I do not know what they are, myself.

It's kind of a combination of those. There's an important one you missed. The more adjoins you are looking through the worse your framerate will be.

Yeah that really does make a difference. My computer, at 1048 x 786 pixels has a framerate of 60 always and never slows down due to number of faces. WAIT! (slaps forehead) I have a 1GHZ system! Well, still the only thing that really effects framerate is number of 3do's visible, number of ajoins in one or more sectors, and poor cogging in MP.

Adjoins are the major cause of framerate problems, and too many 3dos can make it drop, also. 300+ adjoins on-screen at once cause "detail HOM", and you'll have to re-do the level or that portion of it. Surfaces can also bring framerate down - in Nathyn's Super-Globe level or whatever it was called, the framerate was 1 or something, and it had nearly no adjoins, just as hell of a lot of surfaces - same with Freelancer's "Lightmaps in JK".

The detail hom problem can also be fixed by using the viewsave.cog from Drazen Isle.
