"Could not load level" error
2001-02-26, 3:01 PM #1
I was trying to run a small mulitplayer test level to prove that I could do it. When i went to test it, though, it gave me the "Could not load level" error. The level is merely the default box that jed starts out with and two walkplayers. I saved it correctly and filled in and updated "Episode editor." So where am I going wrong? Is there something I'm missing or something special I have to do that wasn't talked about in the FAQ, the Basics section or the tutorials section? Any help would be appreciated.

Carefully go through the saving process again. Making any mistakes in the Episode Editor can cause problems.

(I hate saying this...)Make sure it's set to MP or DM.(arrgh.) Make sure to hit the 'Update' button before hitting the Save button. Make sure your walkplayers are above ground, and assinged to a sector.

Always, and I mean always hit F10 (Consistency Checker) before saving a level.

Saving properly is a first hurdle for a lot of people. Don't worry, you'll get it!

Go to my web site (link is in my signature) and to the editing help/troubleshooting page. It's a discusses that error message a little more thoroughly than the Massassi FAQ (imho).

Thanks for the reply, but nothing you said to do changed anything. Both walkplayers were above the floor and assigned to sector 0, the sector they were in. The saving process I checked and rechecked, along with the episode editor.

I do have other questions, though. What does the episode editor mean where is says "Line #" above where you choose whether the level is a cutscene, a decision or a level. And also, What does A and B mean under the Give Force Powers dropdown boxes/

Does you jed/jkl file have a space in it. If so change it and make sure you modify the episode editor.
Most of that other stuff is for SP but I'm not sure how to use it.

When people can't find it - its usually in the episode editor. In particular (as I mentioned in my FAQ) make sure the .jkl name is all one word with no spaces and that it is the same as the name of the .jed file.

Oh - almost forgot your other question. The line # and goto A goto B stuff is all used only when you are stringing multiple levels together.

Thanks guys for all the input. The problem was that the level name had space in it and it works fine now. So... Hi ho hi ho, it's off to build we go... : )

.jkl and .jed don't have to match, Mike.. In theory, you don't even need to have a .jed file [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Slug - that's true IN THEORY.

I have seen more than one case troubleshooting other people's levles where they gave the .jed and .jkl files different names. The result is that the .jkl referenced in the episode editor is not named the same as the .jkl file that actually gets saved so it's looking for a file by a different name (and thus can't load). I don't know why it happens, but I have seen it first hand. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]
