Help on a Tatooine Level
2001-04-27, 7:41 AM #1
Hi expirienced JEDers. I've always wanted to make a Tatooine level but All I can make is box after box with skys and walls. I got quite a bit of expirience from working on JKEdit but the "levels" I made were s##t. So I got JED. I can do some stuff.
My questions are:
1. How do you make a canyon that like twists and turns
2. Make sectors that don't look boxy
3. Make a place like Mos Eisley with domed roofs and lots of buildings.

I don't know if you can help but please do if you can. I want to make a decent level for a change.

The main thing you need to learn is the art of cleaving.

"Buttons" in Jed

C = Cleaving. You can carve your sectors with this. You hit C then drag a line across your sector.

R = Rotates the veiw. Hold it down and move the mouse. It will allow you to cleave at different angles. But before you can you must hit Commands>GridTo Veiw.

Shift+1or2or3or4or5,etc. = These will snap the veiw to top, bottom ans\d side views of your sectors. To easily cleave them. *Example* Shift+1

To make domes and things like that the easiest thing to do is to have a plugin do it for you. You should go dl some like gorotate to help you make domes.

I think I saw a tutorial a while back on making realistic canyons. You might try to find it. Making things not look boxy requires (1)planning and (2)practice.

On a side note, you might look in Gonk's enemy packs here at Massassi. One of them has a good sandperson enemy based on Al McDonald's skin.

ahem. learn how to make catwalks and that should teach you how to make things look not-so-boxy.
I am lost and could care less if someone finds me.

Yeah there is a tutorial on realistic terrain. While you're there, you might want to check out tutorials on advanced architecture and terrain too.

As for domes, I suggest making a dome and saving it as a 3do (for external domes that is). It'll be ALOT easier, and won't be so hard on the framerate.

Everything everyone says here is true, but I found that editing is soooooo much easier with all the plugins that are available now like go rotate, get bent, etc. The tutorials here at massassi are indispensable, too.
