when i use the stary mat and create a sky, the scale is too large and it looks shocking, how can I make the scale smaller so the stars look like they're millions of miles away instead of 20ft away?

You scale textures with alt+, and alt+.

hmm, that seems a bit confusing. He's saying press the Alt key and while holding it down, press , or . to scale (that's < and > as well)

Just in case that confused you (because it confused me)...

No I think he ment when you set it as sky, the stars appear giant. To fix this, go in level header editor, bottom of the tools menu I think, and set the horizon sky distance to 350 or 400, that should give you the desired effect.
