Trouble with pk3 sounds....please help

hi there

Can someone please spare a few minutes to explain to me the process of changing model sounds in pk3 files, and how to zip the new file back up so it works.

Ive been trying to do this for a couple of days and its driving me mad.I used both winzip and winrar(downloaded just for this little mission)to open the pk3 i want to change(being sithlord-II`s vader)....then overwrote the sounds i wanted to change, and finaly rezipped back into a pk3 but sadly i cant get it to work.(i have tryed many differant ways of making this work,by following rather loose instructions given to people wanting to change player models,i thought it would be the same process...but im obviously doing something if not everything wrong)
Either the model didnt show up at all or the taunt came out as one of the reborns.....why i dont know, cos i didnt even use reborn sounds?

What im trying to do is simply swap vaders.....
taunt...
taunt1...
taunt2....
taunt3...
victory3...
...files into ones ive made myself(some vader wav`s i converted into mp3`s)

Please help me,ive read all the posts i could find concerning pk3`s,but i guess im just one of those cabbage brains that needs it spelling out in clear procise instructions.

The bottom line is ..i need to know how to unzip, edit and re-zip a pk3 file.

I`ve read such horror stories like needing full path names and making new files in my root directory(what are these?)..im affraid im a real newb...im only just trying to figure out how to work winzip and winrar

I would be most thankfull for any feedback.

quite VERY simply.....use Pakscape. BEST DAMN PROGRAM ON EARTH!! it will let you open, copy your files to, and then resave the pk3. look it up on Google

Cheers for the tip wwazman. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

The original vader sound files were in 122 bitrate, but the ones i made had to be 128 bitrate(due to that being the nearest i could get using the ripper that converted my vader wav`s into mp3`s.
Does this make a differance.?

Please help.

I believe it does, I seemed to have errors on my level unless my mp3s were saved with 128 bitrate as well.. I suggest using Goldwave or Soundforge, if you can get a copy, to record the wavs again, (just play them with Windows Wave Player) then use a program like Audio Catalyst to encode the mp3s. Hope this helps!

Hi oostuart,

In the original vader zip there are 45 sound files, all of which are 122 bitrate. The 4 or 5 i have made to overwright some of these are 128 bitrate.
I`ll try to find the programs you mention and hopefully i`ll be able to re-record my wav`s in 122 bitrate to match all the others.
Would it be possible to convert the remaining 40 sound files(that i dont want to edit)into 128 bitrate and still have them work in game.?

You see i dont know if my pk3 file is`nt working because of the differance in bitrate or because ive zipped it up wrong?....i could really do with some solid easy to follow instructions on how to unzip, edit and re-zip pk3 files.

Please keep your suggestions coming, with helpfull replys like these i think i can crack this little problem.

I'm pretty sure 128 bitrate will work fine, the thing is is that the editor (GTK even) has been acting funny on my end, while as most of the time it'll take mp3s with 128, but sometimes it won't, so I'll have to use wave files instead.
As for making a PK3.. it's simple. PK3 file is only a ZIP file renamed. Simply put all of the files you want into a Winzip archive (ie: drag them into the winzip window, and when the new window pops up, name the archive to your liking, then simply rename this new .zip file to .pk3, and you're done!
