Why won't the light textures give off light?
2002-05-25, 8:37 AM #1
I was under the impression that most of the lighting in the Q3 engine was done with textures that give off light. For some reason for every texture I try I just get a pitch black level with only the light texture showing. I cant figure out what I am doing wrong.

Jhlt667:

The only 'textures' that give of light are the ones with a white border and then only some of those. Try experimenting and see what happens.

Lighting isn't done with textures mainly. There are things called lights, which work much in the same way as JED's lights.

Matty is right but if you want to see a beam of light then you use textures.

Not all the shaders give out light. Especially the skies.

I know how to use lights but I thought there were textures that give off light by themselves.

There are some shaders that emit light, but very few. Open up different .shader files in a text editor and search for 'surfacelight'. Shaders with a q3map_surfacelight value will emit light when you run it in game.

This should work in both JK2Rad and GTKRad:

In the texture preview pane, Shift-Click a texture to bring up it's relevant .shader file. Find your texture, if you can, to see if it has that q3map_surfacelight tag on it.

I read a FAQ that said to make your own shaders file, with your own defined shaders (they can use the same textures, but they'll have the light-emitting properties you give them.) That sounded like a good idea to me.

thanks for your help

Yeah, I have no idea why Raven didnt bother to make any of the light shaders emit light... after Q3 its flipping annoying!

I know, if I wasn't so damn lazy I'd go through and fix up ravens dumb mistakes.

LOL @ JM, you're right - they seem to have left so much junk in there for us to sort out. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

In the kejim textures folder, the texture "flatwhite" gives off light, as does "flatwhite_half".
