how do i take screenshots without the character and weapons n hud in

ya go to the command console, type in devmapall to bring up cheat mode...

press enter, then type in levelshot

i think you can also bind that to a key, by doing bind key levelshot (key being the key you choose)

Levelshot doesn't always take a shot of what you're looking at.

Use screenshot_tga, combined with cg_draw2d 0.
