Memory allocation
2002-06-19, 3:55 PM #1
I keep running out of memory when I change textures more than a few times. I have shut down all other programs other than windows and systemtray so I don't have much else running. Sometimes I run out as it is compiling. I have a 500 mghz processor and 196 mb's of memory and a 64 mB card. But I continue to recieve this message after I have changed from texture selections. Such as changing from bespin to Yavin I get this cannot allocates bytes. It usually stops after I restart my pc. Anyway to prevent this?

Let Windows control it. It'll be sure to work, as long as you have enough HD space :/

Not always. Windows won't use ALL of the space. I have two harddrives, and I have half of one of them permenantly denoted as virtual memory. That's some 15 gigs, and I still find myself short at times.

windows at default will only allocate twice the amount of your regular memory size, so if you had 200mb's it would give you 400mb's of virtual memory, if you have XP you can make it where it will devote more of your memory to running programs and it'll suck some from the stuff running in the background (screensavers, backgrounds, virus stuff, things like that) that should help you some....but you really need to up your memeory man...anything under 256 is too low. Also check to see if you need to defragment your hard drive that slows your PC as well, but mostly turn off anything running in your background at start up that you don't need.
