Because it's the only peice of software which can export to the XSI format which Carcass needs to make the GLM model for JO.

You could always ask around here for someone that has 3D Max and ask them if they'll get it ingame for you

I wouldn't recommend getting it from kazaa (or any other peer to peer program for that matter) first of all, it's illegal, and second, half the programs there don't work and/or contain spyware/viruses. Besids, you never know what you really get, you could get a program that says "3D Studios Max" but it's really a program that puts excessive amounts of pr0n on your computer.

After a fair amount of research, I've finally found some details of the .xsi file structure, and am planning to write a plug-in for GMax. However, I have yet to find a good reference for writing plug-ins for GMax - anyone got any good references?

Discreet's website might have stuff on it. Probably under their GMax game kit thingy, I think they have an SDK or something.

Okaaaaaaaaaaay
Just checked out the GMax support forums. Basically, GMax has a EULA that says you can't export or create an exporter, so that knocks that idea on the head. So, I'm going to find another modelling program that's free and that people can use. In fact, one that people who are going to want to do this should know very well. Can anyone say JED?
Obviously it might not be the best environment from a technical point of view (I don't know about weighting vertices to bones, I'll figure that out later, and also caps and what not), and I'm sure Emon will flame me for some reason or other (but hey - it wouldn't be Emon if he didn't, right? :P). But I'm off to the Code Alliance to find out how to write a plugin.
Ciao.

Just a suggestion: I'd kill for a xsi exporter for Milkshape. It's practically free and is used by a lot of people.
Just a thought.......

...No... I wouldn't recommend JED, though, I don't think you could do any of the stuff you'd want to do...

MilkShape has a free SDK for all versions, that would be much better. However every time I use a bone in MS3D it crashes, so I dunno.
