Which is better? Id really like to start editing JO once i get my new system and id like to know what all to get... thanks.

From my experience, and everything I've heard, GTK is the better choice. I gave JKRad a try for a couple days, and while it was just as easy as GTKRad, there were some bugs that existed, and some minor time savers that come in handy that were lacking.

I believe GTK is better, like he said it has less of the irritating bugs, it gets updated, and it's more editor friendly. Like you can zoom in and out on the grid via the scroll, also you can use the scroll for moving the camera in the 3D window. JK2 doesn't have either of these features. These may seem trivial but it really saves a lot of time and is way more convenient. Like my mouse broke on me a few months ago and I had to use my regular trackball mouse, it has no scroll. I had to stop editing all together, I was so used to navigating with the scroll it felt awkward trying to work w/o it. But then 2 days later I got my new mouse and all was well.

For the love of god, GTK is the better choice! When I first started it didn't really seem to be much of a choice. I actually thought that JK2Radiant was better because everything was there set up for you (textures, etc.). Eventually when I did a little more advanced stuff I ran into problems. If you do a little research you will find out that JK2Radiant is really old. It was built off of Q3Radiant v. 147 and there is at least a v. 200 (v. 192 was made in 2000). Go with GTK. It may seem pretty confusing setting it up initially, but it will be a lot better later.

I personally use "GTKRadiant 1.2.8-jk2" for mapping for Jedi Knight II. There is a version 1.2.9 also for JK2 but I still use 1.2.8-jk2 since the updates are NOT necessary.

If you're going to get into advanced single player level design such as using scripting, I recommend getting the "Editing Tools 2.0" which includes the script editor.

Seeing as you're going to START editing, I recommend visiting my website (JK2 Mapping) and download tutorials. You may visit it at:

Download and read the "Understanding" tutorials first to get your basics down, then you may download and read any of the "Scripting" or "Doing" tutorials to get specific stuff done.

007, just because you think you don't need the other, newer versions, why are you going around telling people to use the old ones?

Let me get this straight. Using logic newer is better so updating is something should be done without thinking. Right?

Would I have to update 1.2.8 to 1.2.9 before going to 1.2.10? Could I do it from 1.2.8 directly to 1.2.10?

Okay. Thanks guys, I'll keep that in mind once i get my new comp. I find that JKradiant is a little demanding on this system and i imagine GTK is the same. So once i get my newer system i'll be ontop of things. If the cash would roll in a lil faster.

Just download the full install of 1.2.9, then the 1.2.10 upgrade.

Because I want to and I do anything I want, regardless of any other "disturbances".

I totally agree with the fact of NOT downloading UNNECESSARY files if it takes forever, like with a modem...

I other words, just download "GTKRadiant 1.2.9-jk2" and if you really want to have to download another file and have to install TWO files when formatting to be able to start mapping, then download the 1.2.10 useless upgrade...

I'll be the first to admit that newer isn't always better. You have to look at each new version of a program, and see if it offers advantages. Sometimes a new version can make things worse, by introducing new bugs. Getting feedback from other users before you download the latest, is always a good idea.

If you already have 1.2.8, then it's up to you if you want to download the newer versions. But if you don't, then get the latest.

Regardless, it's nice to be informed that there's a choice.



I wonder what the program's author, would say to that.

1.2.10 isn't useless, but if you have 56K, that HUUGE 10 MB file will take SOO long to download.

1.2.9 is only 6 MB. There's no reason to get 1.2.8 and NOT 1.2.9...

Well i only have 28k So i'll just start both DLs and let them go while i play FFX or watch TV....or even better.... sleep.

I want to see what all the fuss is about. I want to try GTKRadiant but will it overwrite any files in by base folder when I install it?

Nope. By default, it will install to its own directory, and won't affect anything else. You can even have JK2Radiant and GtkRadiant both installed at the same time, and they won't conflict with each other.
