The engine just can't do that kind of lighting, sadly.

really emon? cuz half-life had dynamic lights that could move with a weapon... rockets did that for example...

woulda thought itd be cake for a saber, just have a dim color light in front of the player when the saber was drawn, etc.
Shaving is not a high priority with Jedi.
Would you want to shave with a lightsaber?

I don't like quake, never liked quake, and don't like Star Wars quake. So basically jk2mp.exe never gets used on my computer.

Eh, I hope you realize that even in the SW universe, the saber isn't supposed to really be a light source. It gives off a bit of glow, but that's about it.

1. Half-Life uses a heavily modified Quake I engine, JO uses a heavily modified Quake III Team Arena engine.

2. Lightsabers DO cast light. The only reason you don't see it in the movies is because it's virtually impossible to add light that properly fits with the rest of the film. You'd have to recreate the entire film in 3D meshes, then cast light over those, and take the shadows from that and put it over the original footage.

Actually, in any book that I've read where it mentions the casting of light, there is bit of lighting from it. Forgot about that. Sorry, Emon. But still, there isn't much. It's not like it can light a cavern or whole passageway. There's something like a radius of 1 or 2 meters. Max.

Yeah, but it DOES give off REAL light.

I'm wondering if you can actually make real dynamic lights using shaders... I'll look into it later.

I wouldn't doubt it, considering you can make most shaders produce light.

Well, in real life, if your in a completely dark cave or any where that is completely dark, even the smallest light can light the entire room.
Just go caving and you'll see.

That's true... I've watched those documentaries with people down in Egyptian tunnels and crap underground, and even a lighter gives off a lot of light, and surely a lightsaber does at least that.

The Q3 engine really doesn't do dynamic lighting very well/extensively beyond light styles.

Fourwood, what if you made a shader to emit light, and moved it around? Like making a shader for the player's saber model or something... What would happen?

If you can get shaders to emit light, then you can most likely get it to work. Unless somehow the engine draws it like it's a non-moveable solid or something.
