What is the best way to make terrain landforms? I am making an Echo Base level for SP and I am making a lot of land around the base where the Battle of Hoth is. I need to make rolling hills, many shapes in the snow, and a large gorge or two. Yavin swamps might have some good examples of what I want. What is the best way to make this terrain out of brushes?

Do you have GTKRadiant? It's got gensurf and a good tutorial on how to do terrain. Do you need a sky box for Hoth?

best way i like to do it is to use triangles, and vertex manipulation - but since JORadiant gets screwy using vertex editing on brushes, i use GTK anyway, which has shortcut plugins
Shaving is not a high priority with Jedi.
Would you want to shave with a lightsaber?

I don't like quake, never liked quake, and don't like Star Wars quake. So basically jk2mp.exe never gets used on my computer.

I have GTKRadiant, and I was just curious. I did not know what Gensurf was. By the way Mercenary I eventually will need a skybox, but have you ever played Return to Castle Wolfenstein? In that game there is a mountain skybox that is perfect for a Hoth level. Anyway tell me about your skybox.

Would the Gensurf tutorial be in a link in of the Menu options in GTKRadiant? Or is a tutorial that I can access from a site like planetquake.com?

mapping.jediknightii.net

This site used to have a load of good tutorials, one which was called "Deforming Brushes (Hills)" by Kayron James Mercieca.

The site looks like it's down, but I downloaded the tutorial earlier. Let me know if you want it and I'll email it in a zip file

That only happens if you're not careful. I use the same method as well as you. I simple just make a grid of triangle brushes, group them into a func_group (this allows you to drag more than one vertex if more than one vertex is overlapping another), and simply drag them up and down. I find doing this easier than gensurf. Gensurf can be a pain at times and it's a hassle of creating terrain in the program then import what I made and discover that it's off and have to import it back into gensurf and try again.

Usually I edit brushes by moving edges which is usually successful but making rolling hills and big mountain forms is going to be a problem. I need a whole lot of curves for the bigger shapes, but I think that Yavin Swamps still has the features that I am looking for. I will experiment with both; thanks guys.

I was doing Terragen tutorials lask week and I made a hoth type of sky box. It's not great but I learned a lot from it and I plan to make my own icy planet one for my map. I haven't seen the Return to Castle Wolfenstein sky box you're talking about but if it's that good then use it. If you do use it you won't be able to submit it at Massassi, they got lots of rules and stuff about using textures and sounds from other games or media. No big loss other sites will accept it.

Just make your own that looks a lot like the Wolfenstein one.

for rolling hills:

make a brush where the floor will be (just a rectangle), then go to curve and select 'simple patch mesh'.

select 9x9, or 5x5, or whatever, then a grid will take the place of the brush.

You can drag points on the grid upwards on the z axis and it will curve upward like a hill. That is also at mapping.jediknightii.
