complex spiral brushes
2003-01-21, 1:50 PM #1
You know how in jed you could take a group of sectors and make a wedge and spiral them around to make a big complex spiral brush? unrealed has a similar feature in its 2d editor. I am trying to figure out how to do the same thing with GTKRadiant. Anybody know how to do this? I'll be happy if someone can tell me how to make the grid snap to a vertex of a brush or how to control which vertex of a brush snaps itself to the grid.

Are you looking for the edge and vertex editing modes? Press 'e' or 'v' when a brush is selected.

when a brush is rotated, i can't line it up with the grid the way i want to. i am basically trying to make a curved hallway by making a curved brush (well brushes placed together to make a curve) then using that to subtract the hallway from a larger brush. i was wondering if there was some way to assign which vertex gtkradient uses to snap the brush to the grid. imagine tring to make a doughnut out of sections placed together.

In the tutorial section I saw tutorial related to this... Go check it out.

if you're refering to the 90 degree curved pipe tutorial, i've been there, done that. it doesn't work for what i'm trying to do. gtkradiant seems to screw everything up when i try to rotate a group of brushes, too. i am trying to take multuple brushes, cleave them all so that i have a wedge, then clone and rotate several times, placing all of the wedges together. the pipes tutorial might work i guess if i did every single individual brush - that would get really confusing.

the rotate brush thing in gtk sux.
the easiest way to do it is clip each brush at the angle you want it.

Dear God,

So far it's been a good day --
I haven't yelled, I haven't spat.
I haven't gossiped or kicked the cat.
I haven't lied & haven't cussed.
I haven't whined or even fussed.
But great the task that lies ahead,
for now I must get out of bed.

I don't know if this is what your talking about, but here's how to make multiple sided brushes:
under brushes there are options to make the selected brush anywhere from 3-sided to 9-sided and then theres an option that can make arbitrary-sided. I've gone as high as 32 but i'm sure it can go higher.
sorry if that wasn't the answer you were looking for.

Learn Patches. It will save you headaches, and its easier than brush-work. Just don't get too carried away, as too many patches kill framerate. Anyway, a couple of bevels should give you your curved hallway, and make fine-tune adjustments with the vertex editor (v-key). Problem should be solved there.

I have this big terrain patch that is sorta like an elevated walkway......it sucks framerate. Well i mean, it increases it but y'know.
