Bottomless pits/ skyboxes
2003-03-04, 4:00 PM #1
I am new to the radiant and am havign some difficulty puzzling out skyboxes (assuming that's the texturing process which makes for a sky-like effect?) and bottomless pits. I'm sure it's fairly obvious, but if anyone could set me straight it would be much appreciated.

bottomless pits = make trigger brush about 30 feet above bottom of level's inbounding walls, set damage to -1. Simple as that.

Skyboxes are one of the most simple things to do in Radiant, once you know how. All you need to do is open up the "Skies" texture set, then select the shader you want. The sky shader will either look like a blue and black checkered texture, or it will be white with the word "sky" written all over it. I assume that the sky textures (not shaders) are just there so you can see what they would look like in game, but you definitely do not want to texture your skies with them. I hope that helped you, and if you have any more trouble, or if I just confused the hell out of you, please ask again.

Each surface (or brush) that you want to be the chosen sky should be textured with the same shader. If, when you get in the game, you can't see the shader and just see a checkered black and white surface where your sky should be, try setting sv_pure to 0 instead of the default 1. Reload your map and you should see the proper sky textures.

Sv_pure (pure server) with a setting of 1 instructs the engine to ignore most (all?) of what is in gamedata/base/?/? etc. directories and only allow loading from .pk3 files.
