What is its purpose? Why is it there? I don't think I can move on with life until I know.

I mean, the image says "Link to us!" when you put your cursor over it.. it's not that hard to figure out.

Actually it's a trick for google and other search engine spiders. See, if you link to yourself, their spider gets stuck in a big loop. And thus, it indexes your site hundreds of times, so you pop up on the top of the search results!

Unfortunately, while it works in theory, it doesn't seem to work in practice. I think their spider is broken.
