Rise of Nations + 128mb of RAM = death???
2003-12-01, 1:43 PM #1
I want to play Rise of Nations over our LAN. Now, I'm sure that my dad's comp barely meets the system requirments:
  • p3 500MHz
  • 128mb RAM
  • 16mb Video Card (Voodoo 3)

Technically, there is no reason why this wouldn't work. However, when I tried installing the demo, the PC gamer disk said that it failed the RAM requirment even though it just barely enough. Could this be because the system is using some of that RAM? When I try playing it it gives me an error message.

Now, it just so happens that I am upgrading my comp and will be tossing some of my old RAM. It's 2 sticks of 256mb PC-133 SDRAM. My dad's old Dell comp has a motherboard that supports 256mb PC-100 SDRAM, but not 256mb PC-133 SDRAM. But they are both 168-pin DIMM's.

Here is the memory I'm supposed to get for the Dell.

Here is what I have. (the 256mb one)

Would this work? Is this even the problem since the min. req. is 128mb RAM, which my dad does have?

My old comp (333mhz, voodoo 3, 96 megs of ram) ran Age of Empires and Galactic battlegrounds (Based on the same engine as RoN) Perfectly, albiet it was a bit slow loading/saving

From RoN website:

You can use PC133 even though the motherboard only supports PC100. It just runs the memory at 100Mhz instead of 133Mhz. :/

Yea that one is no prob. Just make sure it isnt touching any other one. Or else you risk shorting something.

Isn't that some sort of plug?
What does that do?

I really don't know what it's for. I don't see why it wouldn't work, except for the fact that I dropped it. (That's why it's bent) But you don't think I'm in any risk of hurting the computer?

Damn, thats oooonnnnne sexay card! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

But that shouldn't matter though, just make sure it isn't touching anything else and be sure to hit your VooDoo 3 with a hard inanimate object. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

EDIT: Don't worry about it damaging your computer unless you FORCE it in and like break everything. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

It should be Ok if it's not touching another pin. I would, however, check to see you haven't physically damaged anything else on the card before you try it.

I would suggest strapping a LOT of heat sinks on that card... otherwise, I suggest you get out some murshmellows and have a treat!

No, RoN doesn't run non the same engine.

Yeah, I was going to say, you're flippin' insane if you think it uses the same technology. RoN uses true 3d heightmapped, alpha blended terrain. (Not to mention the full 3d units).
