What is the maximum transfer rate for a 10/100 network card? What about a 1000 network card? I'm really confused.

Oh, and my windows XP tray icon says that I'm connected at 1.7 Gbps... this really dosn't make sence either. And what the heck is Gbps???

10/100 Ethernet means 10Mbps or 100Mbps, whichever the device it's connected to supports. Usually the hardware nowadays is auto-sensing, and will adjust the speed accordingly.

Gbps = gigabits per second
Mbps = megabits per second
MBps = megabytes per second
GBps = gigabytes per second

Oh, what a difference the Shift key can make.

Tell me about it! How can I convert Gigabits /second to kilobytes /second?

Multiply by 100 to convert to kilobits, then divite by eight to get bytes.

Giga = billion
Mega = million
Kilo = thousand

To convert from Gbps to KBps, multiply by 1,000,000 (1,000 for Gbps to Mbps, another 1,000 for Mbps to Kbps), then divide by 8.

I highly doubt that you're connected at 217 MBps.

Although, you should also know that in computer software, 1,024 is used instead of 1,000. So if you want what's actually used in computer software, use 1,024 above instead of 1,000. If you use 1,000, you'll get results in line with marketese and fine print.

And as an extra tidbit, Hard Drive companies get to pull a little trick. They use 1000 instead of 1024 when listing the size of your hard drive. That's why when you buy that 120gig HD, it ends up only being 111GB. (A bit of it is also dedicated to FAT/NTFS tables, and boot records, but thats a VERY SMALL portion)

All I know is that my little network icon says I'm am connected at 1.7 Gbps. However, I usually get speeds of 150 kilobytes /second, and right now I'm only getting 10 kilobytes /second.
