What’s the difference? Speed, ram usage...
2003-12-06, 7:19 AM #2
Just features. Most users will never notice the difference. Pro is for power users I guess.

I find it quite funny that many pre-built PC manufacturers like selling PCs with P4 Cs and having XP home on them.

Sad how many people think "Oooh, hyperthreading!" when they're running an OS that has no SMP support...
2003-12-06, 7:48 AM #6
Home edition doesnt support hyper?
2003-12-06, 7:51 AM #7
Hyperthreading is basically just simulating multi-processors, and so for anything to support it, it must have multi-processor support. XP Home does not.

So i need xp pro just to use my processor at full? Insane! Well since i just got it im not that worried anymore. Thansks guys. I was just wondering if it was worth my time to install it.
2003-12-06, 9:02 AM #12
There are different installs too.
There is a version that can only do 'upgrade' from 98, and not clean install, I think.
In conclusion:

XP Pro clean install > XP Pro upgrade > XP Home clean install > XP Home upgrade

The upgrade versions just require a previous CD. I was able to format and clean win98 off completely before installing the XP Home Upgrade.
2003-12-06, 9:07 AM #14
Yes, upgrade can do a clean install just fine. Not to mention it's much cheaper.

Only difference is at some point during the installation process, it asks for you to insert a previous Windows version CD for it to verify that you've had a previous version before.

If under the Computer entry in the device manager it doesn't say multiprocessor PC, then hyperthreading's not enabled. Not to mention you shouldn't have two CPU usage graphs in the task manager, can't set affinity of processes, etc.

At first glance, XP Home and XP Pro are identical.

Then, if you ever try to set up network shares, you'll realize that XP Home is a crippled piece of crap that doesn't even have features that were available in WINDOWS 95!
Then you'll accompany me down to Redmond.

Yes, networking in XP is voodoo magic. In the past two weeks, my other computer has chosen not to be offline for a few days, and then suddenly chooses to be online for a bit every now and again, changing network settings for me, without me even touching anything!

I would laugh, were it not the most frustrating thing ever. I don't even know what it's doing most of the time, and XP doesn't want to tell me, whereas 98 would.

According to this article, http://www.eweek.com/print_article/0,3048,a=30903,00.asp, hyperthreading is supported on XP Home.

quote: "Windows XP Home Edition does in fact support hyperthreading," said Greg Sullivan, lead product manager for Microsoft Windows XP. "While Windows XP Home does not support multiple physical processors, it does support the multiple virtual or logical CPUs enabled by Intel's P4 and hyperthreading."

That's really odd. Good for it I suppose, but still odd. Guess I was wrong on that then.

Still greatly inferior to pro though, heh.
2003-12-07, 12:52 PM #22
If you've got the choice - go with XP Pro. I didn't even have to pay for mine [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Your own shared folder, or someone else's? They dont have their permissions set right.

Of course Linux isnt easier. Thats not the point. The point is, never trust an operating system you dont have the source for. And . . . viva la revolutionane, or some such...

The final answer to all your problems.

Don't use computers. Use typewriters instead. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I've never liked Windows, but the best version I've ever used is 2k. I hate XP with a passion. It just seriously annoys the hell out of me. My favorite OS though? Mac OS X. I find it actually FUN to use the computer with it instead of the uphill battle Windows often seems to give me.

If its the same problem I had then you need to change this key on the computer you're trying to get files from:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\

Edit the key IRPstackSize (Or add it if it's not there) and increase it. I suggest increasing it a load to start with to see if that is the problem, then gradually lower it. (Set it to 25 or something to test it).
