Microsoft to break HTTP protocol to 'fix' security flaw

At the bottom of this page it says they're going to make a registry key so that this new 'feature' can be turned off.. (Or on depending on your view..).

You dont NEED Powerpoint. What you NEED is a program that can load powerpoint files, modify them, and save to that format. KPresenter and Impress can do this. As can all the other OSS Presentation apps. Wake up and smell the napalm; you dont NEED Microsoft for ANYTHING. Accept it, and move on.

Okay I was mistaken about Powerpoint, considering that it won't load with any flaws and whatnot, which I doubt but can't prove. But give me Linux that can run Steam (Counter-Strike 1.6, Day of Defeat 1.6, yatta etc client) and I'll switch. There are also a few games that don't come to mind at the moment that I remember not being able to run. Anyways...

HL runs great on Linux, and Wine can probably handle Steam.

Give me a version of linux that will run games as well as windows and i'll switch. It doesn't look like that's gonna happen anytime soon though.

HL does, Steam is proven to not work very well, or at all.

The same could be asked of JK, and the answer is a resounding YES.

Yeah, and the problem is that the only people left playing are the die hard fans, so anyone who just buys the game (Very few people..) will get thrashed by everyone they play and thus they won't play it for long. Yay! Deadly cycles are fun!

People don't play JK, they just edit it.

If you want customization but don't want to have to mess with Linux altogether, thereby having to learn how to make Linux play games, get LiteStep. There are filemanager modules that you can download for LS now that completely circumvent the need for explorer. The only thing it does is run on the Windows kernel. Games run smoothly, you can set up easy to use hotkeys, have a sexy desktop, (sexier by far than any Linux GUI) and have the control that you would get with Linux. But it doesn't make you work as hard as you would with a Linux distro. You only have to configure what you want, the rest of it will work as though you're running Windows, because you are.

Ill sum it up for you... LiteStep is slow, unstable, and it doesnt support multiple monitors.

Wehelll.... this is coming at you from Knoppix (as suggested by Brian) - I've had it loaded for all of about ten minutes and am verily verily impressed with what I've seen so far - especially that my broadband connection just WORKS without being told anything! Score!

I'll be investigation thoroughly in the very near future, but such things as my degree and various other thingses prevent much playing in the next week - bum!

Woohoo!!

Dormouse, yeah, I've tried bluefish. There was something extremely aggravating about it, if I remember correctly, it was the way the menus worked (no tracking and you always have to click to get the arrows to pop out), plus the highlighting for PHP strings was messed up, and the guys refused to fix it (even when I sent them an updated syntax file).

Martyn, wow, I'm glad you actually downloaded it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] It's cool because you can try out different window managers/desktop environments just by typing options. For example, when you get the boot prompt, type:
Code:
knoppix lang=us desktop=icewm
and you'll get basically what I use. Although I have significantly modified my IceWM (http://www.massassi.com/etc/desktop.png). You might also try xfce. Both of these (icewm & xfce) are -significantly- faster than KDE, but of course, there aren't as many options.
2004-02-02, 12:46 PM #56
I'll be trying that! Cheers Bri! (I'd already gone for the knoppix lang =us, I was quite proud of myself!)

The only grief I'm having is with my sound card - it says on the loadup screen it picks it up, but i get no sound - though I'm sure I'll figure it out!

(hehe, I'm converting all my housemates to open source slowly but surely - all of the blokes run opera or firebird now, it's just a matter of time.... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif])

Bigbigbigthanks to all those that gave me advice leading ot this - especially Brian and GBK!! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

It may well be! I'll do me best to check (haven't had much playtime on this yet)

Cheers for the tip!

(PS - am currently on IceWM, it's v v fast!)

Except that Brad is right. Hardly anyone plays JK anymore, and only a few dozen edit it. Whereas with HL, you have a few thousand dozen editors and players, and had probably at least 5x the players in its worst time than JK had in its best...

Opera is not open source nor is it free. I paid for it because it really is the best browser out there. The new mail client sucks, but I got used to it so whatever.
2004-02-02, 9:24 PM #61
My mistake - we use the free [with ads] version - and all think it's superb - the point is I've managed to get them looking past the pre installed! Although Firebird seems to go a touch faster, I prefer the cool stuff like the mouse gestures (I keep trying to do them in Windows!)

[EDIT: Spelling - it's early!]

Firebird has a bunch of plugins that allow mouse guestures - and they are configurable (and you can define new ones). Pretty cool.
